Grant founded a depot on the Chattahoochee River near present-day Gainesville to take advantage of new transportation methods developed by Andrew Jackson's administration. The town grew rapidly around this depot until it reached its peak in the late 19th century when it had a population of 508 people. However, during the 1920s and 1930s, as rural migration increased eastern Georgia's population from Augusta (then within Lumpkin County) began moving into nearby Gainesville to find opportunities for work in industry such as lumbering and farming, the number of people living in Gainesville dwindled until it reached its current level of 21,451 during the 2010 census.

Gainesville, Georgia (also known as "The Glass City") is a city in metro Atlanta and the county seat of Gainesville County. The population was 54,651 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Georgia. The first permanent European settler in what is now Gainesville was James Robertson, who arrived in 1785 with his family from Scotland. In 1802, the town of Gainesville was founded by General John Fayette and named for him after he won a military victory over British forces near Tallapoosa River. By 1814, Gainesville had become one of the most important cities on the Chattahoochee River due to its strategic location just upstream from present-day Valdosta and Decatur counties on both sides of the river. One reason for this growth was that it lay upon high ground overlooking both rivers which made it difficult for either side to attack or defend without taking significant damage. In 1827, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Mobile to Gainesville and named it Jacksonborough after President Jackson himself. The town continued to grow rapidly during Reconstruction period following America's reconstruction effort under Ulysses S Grant’s presidency (1861–1865). When Congress passed The Civil Rights Act of 1964, African Americans were given voting rights throughout all 50 United States based on their place of residence rather than their race alone; however, they were not afforded equivalent rights in gainesville until 1973 when an ordinance changed that rule effective December 1st During World War II, much activity took place within Gainsville proper including defense production at Plant #1 (later Plants 2 through 5) along with some manufacturing activities at Plant #6 which manufactured tanks and other war materiel between 1942 and 1945 Gainesville also played host to several large events such as Super Bowl VIII which took place here on January 6th 1965 between Joe Namath and Bart Starr On October 11th 1969 Atlanta Atlantics outfielder Herschel Walker hit a walkoff home run off then starter Don Newcombe giving Atlanta a 3-2 win against Milwaukee Brewers
