Gainesville, Georgia is a town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 41,651 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of the Gainesville-Marietta metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Gainesville were French colonists who arrived in 1763 and named it after Louisbourg on the Canadian side of the Saint Lawrence River. In 1802, United States Congressman Daniel Webster moved to Gainesville from Rochester, New York and became an early advocate for American annexation of Alabama and Cuba. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army invaded north Georgia and occupied Gainesville before retreating to Montgomery. The town was burned by Union forces on July 15, 1865 as part of a general strategy to destroy all Confederate communications in central Georgia during the Battle of Savannah. Gainesville was founded on May 12, 1819 by Drs. James Davenport and John Troup with land donated by Major General Thomas Telford McDowell (1781-1857). The original store building still stands today next to First Baptist Church on East Main Street (). In 1827-28, William Hogg opened the first wagon road between Atlanta and Mobile via present day Athens Road () and built a cabin near what is now Schoolcraft Park (). Hogg's route paralleled that which later became US Highway 11(). He also served as one of two commissioners appointed by Governor Andrew Jackson to study ways best to connect Augusta with Macon County (). In 1828 he donated land for what is now University Boulevard (), which led from his cabin northwest through present day Beacon Hill () into downtown Gainesville where it crossed University Avenue (). This donation may have been based partly upon an offer made earlier that year by Andrew Jackson himself when he visited Gadsden City limits () adjacent to modern day Auburn Hills (), east of present day Athens Road (). Upon learning about this offer, Hogg donated additional land south of University Boulevard() including parts of what are now Marietta Boulevard(), Courtland Drive (), Dunwoody Place (), Spring Valley Drive ()) - making him one of only three Americans everto donate property specifically within city limits (the others being Reverend Amos Kendall [] and Augustus Mapes ). With this gift , Gadsden became home not only to Jackson but also some very successful businessmen such as Jno Ellyson []. further development followed with new brick buildings erected near current State Route 522 (); these include Pritchett Hall dormitory [] (now known as Regency Village), Beecham Gymnasium (), Otis College Hospital [] (now known as Gwinnett Regional Medical Center), McDonough House[] (now known as Regency Square Shopping Centre)and Agricultural Hall (. King’s Provisionary Bake Shop (); Masonic Temple No 1 ]; Sears Roebuck & Co.; Lamberton Woolen Mills;; Fidelity Loans; IBM ; Coca Cola Bottling Company; GA Power Company ; Southern Airways Corporation ; White Sands Missile Range ]. After several years without any major progress being made on acquiring incorporated status,. A group including banker/investor James Wirtz[], lawyer Lorenzo Dowdall[], physician Samuel Goodloe[], Brothers Rice & Sons merchants Fenton Keyes LLP[]] met at mansion house "Bella Vista" on November 9th 1870 in order to create a non-profit organization entitled “The Hebrew Congregation Of Georgia” because most Jewish people living eastof center had chosen South Carolina over Georgia []].
