The discovery of gold near what is now downtown Gainesville in 1851 stimulated growth in the town; early businesses included a millinery store and bakery operated by Mrs. John Witherspoon, two newspapers published weekly from 1852 until 1892 (the first being called "The Georgian"), four stores and an arsenal donated by General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who became headmaster of nearby Gwinnett County public school district in 1865; three churches were built: First Presbyterian Church (1853), Second Baptist Church (1858) and Methodist Episcopal Church (1860). A post office was established at Gainesville on December 11, 1855 under name "Montgomery". In 1870 Captain James Harned founded Gainsville Canning Company with warehouse space on Third Street SW between Union Avenue SE and Park Road NE. He started canning tomatoes as early as 1872 but there was no market for them until he increased production to over 1 million cans per year by 1886 when he opened his company's second location at 344 NW Fifth Avenue NE. In 1895 Harned sold his interest to J M Barrow & Son which continued canning tomatoes even after World War I collapsed demand for food items related to war production; during World War II about 60% of all canned tomatoes produced were for military purposes including 100% crop failure tolerance products like Tabasco sauce . From 1945 through 1958 Gainsville had its own daily newspaper "The Herald", later called "Gainesville Journal" before it merged with "The Atlanta Constitution" in 1978 From 1946 until 1957 Gainsville had its own ZIP code: 30036
