In 1853 William Lowry purchased 2,000 acres (100 km2) of land west of town on which he built an agricultural college that would become known as Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Auburn University). Lowry moved his school from Brookhaven on Hwy 21 into gainesville in 1870 after becoming secretary of war under Ulysses S Grant; at this time Gainesville had a population of about 10 people (). In 1898 Anson Mills donated 1 million dollars for construction of Medical School Building No 3 which would become known as Vanderbilt University (later Vanderbilt School Of Medicine). The first permanent settler in what became Gainesville was Elias Caulkins, who came to what is now known as Chattahoochee Valley in 1837.
