After Reconstruction ended in 1877, African Americans began to gain access to education and work opportunities in Gainesville. During World War II, Gainesville played a major role in the United StatesAAF's effort against Nazi Germany. The city was bombed nine times during the war, including three raids that killed more than 100 people. In 1949, the University of Florida opened its first college campus in Gainesville. Since then, there have been many growths and changes at Gainesville's downtown area; such as the construction of several large apartment buildings that have become known locally as "the old buildings."
