Forest Park is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 509 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Forest Park began as part of the Chattahoochee National Forest and was annexed byAtlanta in 1887. The city was named after John Forrest, a colonel in the Union army who helped defeat Confederate General Pemberton during the American Civil War. Forrest's widow donated land to be developed into Forest Park, which now has a total area of . The first park was created on what is now Fountain Drive in 1915; it was called Independence Park. In 1917, Atlanta transferred control of much of Chattahoochee National forest to Forest Park for development into an urban parkland with lake, golf courses, and other recreational amenities. In 1984, Atlanta merged its several school districts into one larger district; this left Forest Park as an unincorporated community within the new district boundaries without any municipal or school infrastructure for students and staff. However, local officials have been working to erect facilities such as streetlights and playgrounds over time so that Forest Park can begin receiving some level of municipal services from Atlanta proper (though these are still not fully functioning). In recent years there has been discussion about annexing nearby municipalities including Dunwoody (to the east), Johns Creek (to the northwest), Cumming (to the northwest), and Roswell (to the southeast) so that all six would form one large consolidated municipality under Mayor Kasim Reed's jurisdiction - though no decisions have yet been made about how this would actually happen financially or politically.

Forest Park is an agricultural center with cattle and poultry production being its mainstay economy. The park encompasses 344 acres (145 hectares) of forested land located on the border of downtown Forest Park and Sandy Springs. The first settler in Forest Park were two families from Louisville, Kentucky who arrived in 1892. One family operated a farm while the other took over a store run by their father-in-law for six weeks after arriving. In 1893, a school was built near what is now courthouse square; it served as the town's only public education until 1896 when it became part of Sandy Springs. A post office was established at Forest Park on November 5, 1893; it remained in operation until 1907. In 1886, three men from Chattanooga bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of land south of present day courthouse square for $5 per acre (0). They named their property "Chattanooga Forests". This land had been donated by General William Troup during Atlanta's secession from the United States during the American Civil War to help support Confederate military efforts against Union forces under President Abraham Lincoln. The Fearnley brothers purchased 2/3 of this acreage - including current courthouse square - for $10 per acre ($1/acre) on November 15, 1886 from Major James Balfour who had commanded Sherman's army prior to his surrender at Appomattox Court House USA on April 9th 1865 (). John Jealousy acquired the remaining 1/3rd acreage ($8/$1), which included present day courthouse square and about 200 homes across what are now eastside streets between Court House Square and Lumpkin Avenue (), for $25 peracre ($2/acre) on January 22nd 1889 (). After purchasing this additional piece of forested property adjacent to his original holdings, Jealousy renamed his new tract "Fort Forrest" (). On July 6th 1890 Census there were 8 people living in " Fort Forrest Township" with 4 farms totaling 10 acres (.50 hectare). On September 14th 1890 there were 12 people living in " Fort Forrest Village" with 3 farms totaling 40 acres (.16 hectare).residential buildings date back to 1895 when Belmont Mansion () became home to Mayor Aiken and City Council members Elbert Hubbard Jr., Mrs Wm Hargrave (), Mr Crampton (), Mrs Mabel Morse (), Alice Bowen (); however electric lights did not arrive until October 1898 (). Aiken served as mayor continuously until he resigned due to illness May 15th 1902 (). At that time Roscoe Bartlett succeeded him as mayor effective June 3rd 1902(). Thereafter Beltline Drive would become called First Street through most of present day Forest Park proper while portions extending beyond that limits are still known as Fourth Street (west side), Fifth Street (east side), Sixth Street (north side), Seventh Street (south side), Eighth Street(central area)), NinthStreet(west end), TenthStreet(east end). By 1910 there were 16 homes operating out of 20 total businesses within the village limits with stores servicing needs such as groceries, hardware supplies etcetera.; however most businesses closed by 1920 due economic hardship caused by prohibition laws Marlboro Cigarettes coming into effect that year . At this time much forest had been lost due fire suppression techniques used including chemical burning which caused extensive damage throughout northeast Georgia . With many trees killed or injured during these early years many citizens began protests against excessive firefighting measures being taken by local firefighters outside their homes emergency services becoming available only after several large fires broke out starting with Brush Creek Fire December 1913 followed rapidly by others such as Locust Grove Fire December 1915 , Newton Fire January 1916 , Chattahoochee River BridgeFire February 1917 ). Although some residents foughtback using whatever means possible these larger blazes eventually resulted in restrictions placed upon local elected officials controlling how much money could be spent fighting wildfires
The Forest Park area of Georgia was first settled by the Cherokee in the late 18th century. The area was purchased by the United States in 1815 and formed part of what is now Alabama. In 1823, a smallpox epidemic killed more than half of the Cherokee in what is now Georgia. The remaining Cherokees were forced to sell their land to white settlers. By 1830, about 60% of present-day Forest Park had been organized as a town. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee occupied Fort Pillow in Forrest Park and ordered his men to burn all civilian property within 10 miles of the fortifications. More than 160 homes were burned and more than 100 people were killed as a result of the rampage. In 1870, Forrest Park became an independent city and renamed it Atlanta. By 1895, Forrest Park had a population of over 50,000 people and was one of the most important industrial centers inAtlanta County. In 1915, Forrest Park was annexed by Atlanta and became part of its central business district; however, due to financial problems, it reverted back to its original name on October 1st 1923 when Atlanta annexed Fulton County into which Forrest Park fell
