Forest Park is a community located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was estimated at over 21,000 as of the 2010 census. Forest Park is adjacent to Atlanta and has a mix of traditional rural homes with newer development. There are also several parks and green spaces within the community. The forest that now makes up Forest Park was first settled by European colonists in the 17th century. The area around present-day Forest Park was part of what is now Druid Hill Township, which had been created from portions of two previous counties - Marietta and Gwinnett - in 1802 following the Georgia General Assembly's approval of a charter for new Georgia townships. In 1807, the United States acquired land east of Atlanta and developed it into what is now Forest Park. The first settler in Forest Park was James Caldwell, who arrived about 1795 on an agricultural survey organized by General James Ross Thomson. Caldwell purchased 640 acres (2 km²) near present-day Decatur Street/Highway 6 south of downtown Atlanta from John Whitehead for $500 cash plus 10% interest payable each year on the sale price. In 1813, Isaac Asbury purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east of downtown Atlanta from James Caldwell for $1,100 cash plus 10% interest payable each year on the sale price. Asbury built an orchard there that yielded apples that were ground into flour and sold commercially until 1865 when Prohibition deprived Americans of buying alcohol across state lines through taxes applied to distilled spirits rather than beer or wine. In 1870, Alfred Sloan bought 486 acres (18 km²) along Decatur Street/Highway 6 north of downtown Atlanta for $10 per acre ($160 total). Sloan began developing this land into one large city park named after himself – Forrest City – which opened to the public in 1914.. During World War II, Forrest City served as a training camp for troops deployed to fight in Europe; it later became known as Freeman Air Force Base after its primary use changed to hosting military aircraft during FY 1955-1964; however most operational activity ceased with the base's closure due primarily to budget cuts during Ronald Reagan's presidency.. In 1946, Forrest City lost its status as an air forcebase when Freeman AFB closed down due mainly to budgetary cuts during then–President Harry S Truman's presidency; however some operational activity continued until its closure including flying experiments out of Forrest City by Project Signals Directorate at nearby Alpharetta Airport which ultimately led to creation of North American Aerospace Defense Command providing warning against potential nuclear attacks outside US borders ..
