That year also saw the opening of Atlanta's first hospital-the Good Samaritan Hospital which served as both clinic and maternity home until 1917 when it became known as Grady Memorial Hospital-in what is now Midtown Atlanta. In 1903, John Pemberton bought some of Evansville's land which he used for his plantation business before turning it over to the City of Atlanta in 1907 as part of an agreement that gave control of Atlantica's water resources back toGaiety phosphate mine owners In 1912, entrepreneur Arthur Ashe began developing tennis courts adjoining his plantation near what is now Midtown Atlanta; what would later become Forest Park were these courts site for play only during childhood years because adult competitions were held at Marietta Cricket Club instead By 1920, ForestPark had developed into one ofAtlanta's largest communities with 150 businesses employing 30000 people within its boundaries In 1924 Georgia Governor John Abernethy issued Executive Order No 8802 creating the Department of Commerce & Industry This department would grow exponentially under Abernethy's leadership becoming oneofthe most powerful forcesbehind Georgia's emerging blue collar economy In 1928, forest park annexed portionsofwhat arenow Sandy Springsand Dunwoodytownshipstoforma new municipality called Dunwoody County . This annexation resulted in much growth for forest park due to increased agricultural production due to increased access to markets through Interstate 95 southbound traffic
