Forest Park is a census-designated place in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 8,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1892 as a small hamlet on the edge of what is now MidtownAtlanta. By 1912 it had grown to include over 2,000 residents and was annexed by Atlanta. In 1916 Forest Park was designated as an all-county park with a combined budget of $500,000 ($ in ). In 1948 Forest Park became part of the newly formed city of Atlanta after it merged with other municipalities within the city limits. The following year saw major development when forest land adjoining Midtown was purchased for use as an expanding inner city district called "the South Side". In 1978, four years after its incorporation into Atlanta proper, Forest Park passed annexation by Roswell Heights which made it an official part of Roswell Heights until 2000 when both communities rejoined Fulton County and lost their own elected officials. Today Forest Park boasts more than 12 miles (19 km) of paved bike trails, an international pond and soccer field named in honor of former Mayor Shirley Franklin (1975-1981), two schools - Hawkins Elementary School and Greenleaf Intermediate School - as well as several businesses including Home Depot and Wells Fargo bank headquarters located just off Interstate 285 between I-285/I-485 interchange eastbound lanes and Peachtree Road westbound lanes. There are also plans for additional development adjacent to Hawkins elementary school that would include office buildings, a multi-purpose hall & amphitheater for events such as music concerts or art shows etc., retail space on Wilson Boulevard across from Hawkins Middle School, single family dwellings on Pryor Avenue near US 75/I-285 interchange northbound lanes and new apartment complexes developments nearby on Snell Parkway just south of I-285 exit ramp tolled expressways providing easy access to all parts of town while preserving open space along each side street
