The first European settler on what would become Forest Park was James Pemberton, who bought land east of what is now Peachtree Road from John Dent in 1827. In 1830, Pemberton donated 3 square miles (8 km2) to Georgia for public education and development; this became known as Forest Park after he died in 1833 without any children having inherited his land. The city was founded on December 12, 1837 by Drury Lane resident Isaac Bancroft under the name "Newbern." In 1847, Pemberton's widow sold him her remaining interest in Forest Park to Benjamin Hawkins for $5,000 cash; Hawkins then developed it into a small town with two churches and 20 homes around a meeting ground called Old Courthouse Square (). When Hawkins died in 1850 his son Orson Hyde took over administration of the village until he too passed away five years later (). On May 15, 1902 Coca-Cola Company installed its new bottling plant No 1A at 2200 Peachtree Road (), just south of Old Courthouse Square (). That same year saw the opening of Georgia State University's Agricultural Extension Service campus nearby (); this eventually led to construction of several other colleges and universities within walking distance of Forest Park including Kennesaw State University (), Mercer University () and Morehouse College (). Forest Park was founded in 1836 as a forest reserve, and became an incorporated town in 1881. The city of Atlanta annexed the town in 1889, and Forest Park became part of Atlanta proper. Many small ponds remain throughout the park as well. From east to west Peachtree Street runs through the heart of Forest Park; from north to south it runs along DeKalb Avenue. There are several important intersections within the park: one on Swann Boulevard at Edward Humes Parkway (the intersection closest to downtown Atlanta), another at 14th Avenue South near Ponce de Leon Boulevard (near where Interstate 285 crosses over from Fulton County into Gwinnett County), yet another just inside the boundaries of the old Candler School District on East Lakeview Drive (just outside what is now known as Old Fourth Ward), and finally one near University Parkway/Chrysler Stadium/Ponce de Leon Blvd./Old Fourth Ward Line Station which forms what used to be called “Greene” Cemetery before it was re-named after Dr. Jekyll Island after its discovery by Countess Georgia Mora Stone in 1893.
