Forest Park is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 36,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Forest Park was founded on July 1, 1892 by Dr. George W. Smith as a plantation within what is now the City of Atlanta. The land for Forest Park was donated by General Nathan Bedford Forrest and other wealthy Atlantans including Arent Harkness and John Pemberton who also contributed money to help finance development of the park which eventually became one of Atlanta's most popular tourist destinations. The first public park in Forest Park opened to the public on October 5, 1892 with a small tract of land adjoining Druid Hill Cemetery east of Cumberland Road NE in what today is MidtownAtlanta and home to many quality restaurants and nightlife options like Macaroni Grill & Lounge and Jazz at One). On this site were basketball courts, a swingset, an observatory (now an art museum), playgrounds for children and horseback rides for adults/ youths. In 1916-1917 Cherokee Indian chief known as "King Cotton" leased 6 acres (2 km²) adjacent to Druid Hill Cemetery from trustees under provisions that it be used onlyfor education purposes rather than being turned into open forestland as intended; this gift preserved much green space around Druid Hill Cemetery which otherwise would have been lost to development had it not been for Cherokee intervention. Forestry pioneer James Meeks established his farmstead near present day Decatur Street NE in 1916 after leaving his fortune to assist Fenton Academy students in their forestry studies while he continued work on his own cotton plantations south of Savannah prior thereto In 1917 Meeks donated land northeast of current day Roswell Road SW across from Chattahoochee River Parkway for use as a botanical garden with later holdings totaling more than 8 square miles (21 km²). Today Decatur Street NE runs concurrently through both parks paralleling Interstate 85/I-285W where it meets Hale Avenue NW .Meeks' Farmstead has since been demolished but remnants can be seen along Hale Avenue NW near Roswell Road SW cornering I-285W . The early 20th century saw Georgians become increasingly interested in nature conservation having experienced World War I air raids that damaged or destroyed millions homes and businesses across Southern Georgia; during this time African Americans working on white farms began taking up Conservationism as well developing similar philosophies about racial justice that led them to demand social responsibility towards all life forms instead of just human beings alone especially those considered " racially inferior". This type of thinking led Georgians such as Reverend Coady Kilpatrick(1875-1945) who became President Woodrow Wilson's special advisor on Negro Affairs during WWI – unprecedented then or since –crippled white society economically speaking largely due theretoowing black Georgians access onlyto limited opportunities enjoyed by whites outside their communities leading some descended generations into poverty without any real say over their lives or future prospects despite strong economic forces working against them throughout history…Coady Kilpatrick's vision never wavered until 1957 when he founded Tuskegee University together with Booker T Washington College System becoming one institutionally Black college/university
