However, business resumed in 1947 when General Motors started producing cars there. As production increased, so too did traffic congestion and environmental problems began to arise around the plant; these problems led to GM moving their operations out of Forest Park in 1979. In 1906, Forrest Parks (a grandson of founder John Wilkinson) donated over four square miles (10 km2) to be developed into an open-air park with tennis courts and other recreational amenities for residents and visitors alike. Forrest Parks also donated $100,000 to help build roads and drainage systems within the park boundaries. The present-day forest park was carved out from part of this gift by Mayor James Meeks in 1916 as part of his vision for creating a new city center in downtown Atlanta. Since its creation as an open-air park, Forest Park has been home to many important civic institutions including: The Atlanta School Board; TheAtlanta City Council; Chattahoochee Regional Hospital; Peachtree Plaza shopping mall; Coca Cola Company Bottling Plant #1; Coca Cola Company Bottling Plant #2 – both located adjacent to Ponce de Leon Mall;and The Falcons football team which plays their home games at Philips Arena inside the original Forest Park Stadium
The forest park was developed in the early 1800s as a land grant to General John C. Lee by the Georgia General Assembly. The area now includes parts of Atlanta and Fulton counties. The first settlers were men from Virginia who arrived in 1795, and began clearing land for farming. In 1802, the United States bought 2,000 acres (800 ha) of the forest park from Russia for $10,000. The United States Forestry Service was created in 1908 to manage and protect the forests within the park.
