Forest Park is a town in metro Atlanta, Georgia, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. Forest Park is part of the Fulton County government and lies on the western edge of Clayton County. It occupies about 4 square miles (10 km2). The first people to live in what is now Forest Park were Creekside Indians who hunted and gathered food near the Flint River. In 1764, James Robertson founded a small settlement here which he named after his father-in-law's plantation in Scotland – Allan Fenton's estate easternmost on the Chattahoochee River. During the American Revolution, several different army units camped here before moving on to battle against General George Washington at Yorktown. In 1801, Captain John Dunlap of the militia built a log cabin here while he was stationed with Major General Andrew Jackson's forces at Tuscaloosa Court House on Little Hocking Creek. The following year, Dunlap married Anna Fountain and this became known as Dunlap Manor or Old Plantation because it continued to be used as a family home until 1832 when it was sold to Drury Coles for $6000 dollars (). 1st District Congressman Thomas Garrett lived there from 1865-1868 In 1881, Augusta Temple moved into what is nowDunlap Manor from her home in Decatur where she had been living since 1847 (). She donated most of her land including much that makes up present day Forest Park to become an open space preserve called Druid Hills National Monument (). After years of fundraising by various organizations such as Friends of Forest Park and Atlanta Greenways Foundation (), construction began on parkland that would eventually include portions of today's Forest Park. The first community meeting held in what is now Forest Park took place on December 3rd, 1881 during which time representatives from Decatur (then Anacostia) and Gainesville agreed to join together in creating a new community within their respective townships with shared borders between them but no water connections between them other than through channels found near springs located around both townships. Anna Fountain Dunlap served as president of this initial village board which consisted of eight members: four men elected by vote from among those seated; two women were also elected by vote; one member served term renewable for three years; one vacancy occurred during its first year and thus another election was held within days without any delay,. One reason for this early onset decision making may have been Anna Fountain Dunlip’s desire “to see more property patented so that we could make some money out West” (). As Forrestown developed over time additional landowners began donating parcels of land making up present day Forest Park including Drury Coles (+$165k), Ebenezer Sibley (+$175k), David Lamar Bryant (+$235k) & Alfred Ladd (+$245k)). By 1905 all but two participants from original Village Board had passed away: Danforth Lewis died suddenly aged 54 years old just five months into his fourth term while Addie Lewis extended her life until age 91 years old by retiring after serving sixteen terms (); Mrs. Laura Goode Dodge died suddenly six weeks later due to pneumonia only days after taking office as President pro tempore for the First District () . Despite being short-lived compared to other contemporaneous communities across America - officially formed only eighteen months earlier - Forrestown has nonetheless been cited often as an important predecessor/model for many subsequent suburban developments throughout metropolitan Atlanta over ensuing decades (). Today Forrestown continues to maintain close ties with its founding community through annual festivals celebrating its history along with educational programming aimed at promoting rural values within Metro Atlanta
