The Forest Park area in Georgia was first settled by European colonists in the late 18th century. The area that now includes Forest Park was part of the Cherokee Nation until 1795, when it was taken over by the United States government as part of the Treaty of New Orleans. In 1802, a small community called Pleasant Hill was established in what is now Forest Park. By 1860, there were only a few hundred people living in Garden City and Pleasant Hill, but they had built up a sizable trade with nearby Savannah and Charleston. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Union troops at Antietam Creek, resulting in the Battle of ForestPark. The battle resulted in more than 100 casualties for both sides and afterward Forrest Park became one of the few locations where Confederate soldiers could be found living openly. In 1865, after the Civil War ended, Ulysses S. Grant moved his headquarters from Cairo to Fort Donelson onIVa River near present-day Atlanta. He needed an access point for his military operations against General Robert E. Lee and decided to build a fort here in order to protect his supply lines from Confederate forces coming down the Ia River. On July 10, 1865, Fort Donelson surrendered to General Lee without any fight after months of siege. Forest Park developed rapidly thereafter due to its strategic location betweenAtlanta and Chattanooga as well as its proximity to military installations like Fort Donelson and Lookout Mountain National Military Reserve Training Base (now known as Joint Base reimbursement). Many homes were built during this time including Cedar Grove Estates which still stands today within Forest Park boundaries; many other homes were destroyed or moved away during this period due primarily to fire damage or construction projects taking place within the park itself such as Lakewood Cemetery which still stands today within Forrest Park boundaries today.]]
Forest Park, Georgia is a small town in north-central Georgia. It is bordered by Muscogee County on the west, Carroll County on the east, and Fulton County on the south. The population was 8,827 at the 2000 census. Forest Park is part of the Athens–Clarke metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1878 when a group of citizens of Muscogee County united with those of Carroll and Fulton counties to create a new township. The name was changed to Forest Park in honor of Edwin Forrest, an American actor who helped promote civil rights and fight for white supremacy during the mid-20th century. Forrest was born in nearby Decatur in 1847 and died there in 1936. Forrest Park is home to three churches: First Baptist Church (founded1878), United Methodist Church (founded 1915), and Christmastime Christian Services Corporation (chartered 1963). The park also contains a playground, basketball court, baseball diamond, football field, tennis courts, swimming pool, as well as Gadsden State College's main campus on one side and smaller colleges on the other side. The local economy depends largely upon agriculture and forestry; however recently some development has taken place including several houses built along Interstate 85 near downtown that have become rentals or tourist destinations for residents and visitors alike

The first home in Forest Park was built by James Dickey on land that is now part of the city of Atlanta. In 1865, Forrest Battle fought at Gettysburg and this gave rise to the name "Fortress Park" which is still used today. The town developed slowly until around 1880 when a group of entrepreneurs came up with the idea to develop a park in the area. They named it Forest Park after what was then an entirely rural area in Georgia. This new park quickly became one of ATL's most popular tourist attractions and boasted beautiful gardens, several swimming pools and well-maintained playgrounds for children. The popularity of Forest Park led to more development and in 1914, it became a municipality with its own government. It wasn't until 1947 that Forest Park incorporated as a city with its own governing body which allowed for more modernization including better public transportation and more housing developments. Today, Forest Park is one of ATL's most vibrant cities with plenty of activities for all ages to enjoy!
In the early 1800s, Forest Park was a small community on the east side of Atlanta. The area now includes much of what is now Forest Park and parts of Little Five Points. The first settler in Forest Park was Nicholas Christopoulos, who arrived in 1793. He and his family lived on Fourth Street near what is now Peachtree Road. By 1812, trees had been planted in the area, and by 1815 there were three stores and one tannery in the town. In 1817, Nicholas’ son John set up a sawmill near what is now Brookwood Avenue. A post office was established at Forest Park in 1818, and by 1830 it had 12 residents. The town began to grow rapidly, with more buildings being constructed until it reached its peak population of around 200 people in 1840. However, due to cotton manufacturing arriving from Mississippi during the 1840s (and ensuing Famine), many people left for economic reasons. In 1850, when Georgia became an American state, Forest Park became part of new Fulton County; however, it continued to be known as "ForestPark." In 1865 it lost its charter as a county seat because of population growth within Fulton County; however it regained its charter as a village in 1870 under new leadership which included Rev William Lawrence Dunlap Jr.. The village continued to decline until 1974 when it merged with neighboring Peachtree Village into the present day city of Atlanta.
