Gaines who purchased land from General James Oglethorpe in 1887 for $1,500 dollars. Mr. Gaines laid out a small town called "Gainesville" on his property and within two years had attracted over 100 people to live there with only 10 acres left unclaimed . In 1890, Mr. Gaines donated 30 acres to the city of Atlanta for use as a public park . This was an important event because it allowed Forest Park to become part of Atlanta and still retain its rural feel today In 1913, Mayor J A McClendon dedicated four large ponds at what is now known as Meadow Lake Drive (northwest corner of Vinings Road) as part of plans to improve infrastructure in Gwinnett County while creating new business areas In 1916-1917, construction began on what would become Georgian Hall which housed both the city hall and court house When World War I started in August 1914 all businesses closed due to lack of military supplies After the war ended however many businesses reopened including civilian stores that had been closed during war time WhenAtlanta became an American city again in 1920s many people decided to move back into their former homes in Forest Park thanks to high demand from families looking for a peaceful neighborhood
Forest Park was founded in 1847 as a plantation community on the east side of Savannah. The area that now includes Forest Park was part of the original Georgia colony, which was founded in 1733. In 1847, the manor and farmstead at Forest Park were donated by General James Eppes to the Georgia General Assembly. The land for Forest Park was acquired from the Epps family by Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1886. Forrest named the community after himself, but it reverted to its original name in 1902 when Forrest's widow changed it to Forest Park after her late husband's estate passed into her control.
