Forest Park is a small city located in the northeastern corner of Georgia. Forest Park was founded on October 12, 1892, by Dr. J.C. Sprague and Dr. George Prentice as a rural community of about seventy-five people. The city was named for the forest that surrounded it on three sides. Forest Park’s first mayor was A.B. Stephenson and its first vice president was Fenton Waddell Jr.. The population of Forest Park increased rapidly from five hundred to two thousand during the early years of the twentieth century due to the growth of agriculture and industry in central Georgia. However, the depression caused many farmers to move away from Forest Park during this time period, leading to a decrease in population until World War II when it slowly began to increase again due to wartime demand for goods produced in Georgia’s booming manufacturing sector. The postwar period saw some major changes take place in Forest Park as well as throughout Central Georgia thanks to advances in transportation and communication technology which made it possible for residents and businesses alike to grow more quickly into the new millennium. In 2000, Forest Park became an official City of Atlanta suburb with full voting rights and powers over all local affairs including zoning, planning, budgets, elections and public works projects within its boundaries

The Forest Park area of Georgia was settled in the mid-19th century by farmers and their families. The name "Forest Park" is derived from a large oak that stands at the center of the park. The first settler in Forest Park was Nicholas Pemberton, who arrived in 1827. In 1834, Forest Park became a part of Cobb County and was named after Colonel James Forrest, an American soldier who had fought in the Mexican-American War. After county lines were drawn in 1901, much of what is now Forest Park fell within Atlanta proper. However, some land outside of Atlanta was annexed into the city as part of its growth. By 1920, there were over 100 homes and businesses in Forest Park. In 1925, forest park became a national forest and remained so until 1972 when it was combined with other federal forests to form National Forests System headquarters located on scenic Cumberland Plateau near Peachtree City. Today, Forest Park enjoys more than 350 acres of hiking/mountain biking trails as well as extensive public facilities including two lakes (Lake Dunlap and Lake Fulton), three golf courses (Champion Course, Centennial Course, North Gwinnett Course), five tennis courts (Georgia State Courts Complex - Main Court; Memorial Court; Pavilion Court; South Courts Complex - East Courts Oval), one horseback riding stable (Dunlap Stables) and one soccer field (Atlanta Soccer Stadium). Some favorite activities at Forest Park include picnicking on beautiful open meadows or enjoying peaceful walks through towering cedar trees with crystal clear waters below; playing basketball or volleyball on beautifully landscaped courts next to sparkling lakesides; birdwatching atop tall pines while listening to music from nearby amphitheaters during summer months; fishing for catfish or bass around diverse streams or ponds throughout the year; taking photos at interesting places like old Growth Trees or watching people take their dog for a walk on beautiful trails leading down to Cherokee Lake
The Forest Park area in Georgia was first settled by the Cherokee in the early 1800s. The area was later annexed by Georgia in 1825, and became a part of the newly formed United States of America. In 1839, an act of Congress designated Forest Park as a national forest. The forest was purchased by the federal government in 1865, and became part of National Park Service. In 1928, Forest Park merged with nearby Gainesville to form one large park system.
