The City of Forest Park was created from portions of three villages: Chattahoochee Hills, Dunwoody Heights, and Marietta (the latter lying within Cobb County). On December 20, 1892, J.B. Cline purchased 8 acres (3 ha) of land at what is now Forest Park from Drury & Sons Hardware Store on Auburn Avenue for $1 per acre ($0·50 per hectare). The land had been donated by Samuel Gregg Colquitt who died in 1891 after donating nearly all his farmland within what is now Forest Park to be used for public park purposes. On May 25, 1893 - one year after Cline's purchase - Mayor John Aiken dedicated Forest Park with speeches from then-Governor $alton Pinchback and then-Mayor Millard Fillmore . It would become one of Atlanta's first municipally managed public parks with an open air theater opening in 1895 that allowed people to view plays outdoors without fear of spoiling or rain damage
