Fayetteville is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia and the county seat of Fayette County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 25,491. The city is named after James Fenton, 1st Baron Fenton who donated land for its incorporation in 1823. Fayetteville was founded by American Revolutionary War soldier and entrepreneur James Fenton on July 3, 1823 as a small town on his donation of land to the state of Georgia from his estate in Scotland. The name comes from George Washington's birthplace, Mount Vernon; when Congress created Fenton County in 1833, it named it for him as well as another Revolutionary War veteran, General Nathanael Greene. Voters approved a $5 million bond issue to build schools and other public works in November 1830 – making Fayetteville one of the wealthiest cities in Georgia at that time – but within two years most progress had been undone due to extensive fires caused by British Tories burning draft-card caches throughout the area during their campaign against American independence movements led by George Washington himself. The first post office opened in 1827 and remained open until 1959; at that time it was moved to Murfreesboro because mail service was available only once a day from Atlanta to Chattanooga through Mobile Bayou between Athens and Montgomery counties before being discontinued there permanently in 1865 due to low shipping rates resulting from Confederate blockade runner actions offshore. In 1861–1865 Confederate forces burned all but one block of downtown Fayetteville while attempting unsuccessfully to take control of the city; Union troops destroyed most remaining evidence following an eight-day siege which climaxed with an attack on December 12 that resulted in over 150 civilian fatalities including many women and children attending mass services being conducted inside Cathedral Basilica prior to surrendering unconditionally four days later without any formal conditions having been met or offered by either side (a condition which would have included providing food or water supplies). Fayetteville is a town in Fayette County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Fayetteville began as a small community on the northeast side of what is now Fayetteville proper. In 1853, J.M. Tuttle established a gristmill in what is now downtown Fayetteville and supplied flour to many surrounding villages and towns until 1861 when he moved his mill to central Georgia and built a larger one there that continues to produce flour today. In 1871, Samuel Burch started an oil business in what is now downtown Fayetteville and soon became one of the leading suppliers of fuels for locomotives and other transportation in northern Georgia and eastern Alabama. He also founded (1875) the first cotton gin in east Alabama which continued operation until it burned down in 1902. His son John Burch succeeded him as founder of the Burch Oil Company which still operates out of downtown Fayetteville today with production increasing five-fold since its founding! In 1907, Fayetteville was incorporated as a city by an act of the General Assembly; at this time it had a population of 561 people including 611 whites and 11 Negroes! The first mayor was A C McDowell who served from 1907-1909; W L Young took office for two terms before being impeached for bribery during World War I; he returned to office after being pardoned by President Wilson but never lived long enough to serve again! After World War II ended, most African Americans left town except for some who worked at local businesses or government jobs such as firemen or policemen; however few were able to forget their past experiences here during segregation while living elsewhere throughout much of America! However slowly but surely over time African American residents began returning back into their old neighborhoods starting with modest projects like repairing streets or building fences around homes while working odd jobs outside their homes; gradually more ambitious undertakings got underway culminating with plans for reopening old black churches destroyed during white rule – all without much public opposition! Finally over 50 years later on November 12th, 2008 Mayor James Weldon Coleman announced plans for renovation & redevelopmentof historic black church “Second Baptist” located just off US Highway 411 between Third Street & Fourth Street – opening ceremonies will take place on Saturday September 20th 2009 !!!
