When Sherman's forces reached Chattanooga in 1865, he destroyed much of Atlanta but left behind Fort Worth, which represented an important strategic point for the Confederates because it lay between Sherman's march through northern Georgia and his ultimate goal of reaching Richmond across Alabama-Oklahoma territory. In 1881–82 Fayetteville formed part of a large statistical area (the "Atlanta metropolitan area") that was created when all former slave states within Unionist hands were annexed into newly formed America; this included most of what is now southern Tennessee and eastern Mississippi. In 1932 Hosea Williams developed a plan for developing downtown into one large shopping district called "The Circle." The downtown business district currently includes more than 150 stores with an estimated total economic impact totaling $2 billion annually

Fayetteville is a city in and the county seat of Fayette County, Georgia, United States. The population was 34,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Fayetteville was founded in 1799 by General James Wilkinson as an outpost on the Chattahoochee River to help protect travelers on their way to what would become Atlanta. In 1802, Wilkinson founded what would become known as "Wilkinson's Landing" on the north bank of the Chattahoochee River opposite present-day DeKalb County. In 1806, Wilkinson moved his headquarters from Fayetteville to Macon and developed it into a prosperous town with cotton plantations and other businesses. In 1815, Fayetteville became capital of Georgia after Savannah was burned by British forces during their war with America. In 1830, Governor Thomas Moore established a military post at Fayetteville for Colonel John Cushing and his command of the Alabama militia against Indian raids into central Georgia. After independence was declared in 1814, Moore ordered Cushing's brigade to defend Athens against possible Indian attack while he participated in a campaign against Mexico City. Afterward,Moore assigned Cushing's brigade to garrison duty at Fort Gaines near Dahlonega until March 17, 1825 when he relieved it under orders from General Andrew Jackson at Mobile Bayou without waiting for instructions from Jackson himself about how to proceed forward with its occupation or use. From there Cushing's brigade proceeded via Auburn (now part of Birmingham) and Coweta (now part of Tallahassee) before arriving at Fort Pulaski near Chattanooga on April 14th where they relieved Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest's brigade which had been occupying that fort since December 12th following Forrest's victory over Major GeneralJohn Bell Hood south of Chattanooga along Tennessee State Route 25 close to Lookout Mountain within sight of Nashville mountain range east of this location). The garrison here consisted mainly of men who had enlisted previous summer under Hood as reinforcements for MajorGeneral Nathan Bedford Forrest’s army fighting in connection with militarily successful operations initiated byGeneral Andrew Jackson outside Nashville led by MajorGeneral Nathan Bedford Forrest – actions that ultimately resulted in major victories for both Captain Elijah Bledsoe (a slaveowner),Major Robert Ewell (an American white settler),and Lieutenant Colonel James Moultrie(white man born free/citizen/native Georgian). Most soldiers who served here were not paid but receivedration for participation only if they happened upon enemy combatants or supplies captured during hostilities
