Fayetteville is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia, on the Savannah River. The population was 21,569 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers in what would become Fayetteville arrived in 1733 and named it after George Washington's father, Lt.-Gen. Nathanael Greene (1702-1776). The early courthouse was built on what is now Fletcher Street near downtown Fayetteville and housed government officials, lawyers, judges, merchants, planters and others who administered justice in what was then a frontier region with few established institutions or social services available to residents other than hunting, fishing and trading opportunities that were not easily accessible by wagon or horseback. Majnoon Ali Muhammad founded Fort Moultrie in 1819 as an outpost between present day Decatur and Jonesboro to protect travelers coming downriver from Creek Indians who were raiding crops along the river bottomlands north of Fort Moultrie. Majnoon Ali Muhammad also dug a canal through his land linking the Chattahoochee River to provide water for plantation owners south of town while preventing Creek Indian attacks on white families living thereabouts; this canal became known as Turner's Canal after Genl James Turner (1794-1875), an American general during much of these years who served as military governor of Georgia under Jacksonian rule during portions of that period when Cherokee Nation lands lay within our borders In 1837 President Andrew Jackson made Fayetteville part of newly created Fulton County based on recommendations from General Nathan Bedford Forrest (1810-1872) then commandant generalof Confederate forces occupying northeastern Georgia during that time period; at this time some areas including eastern Cobb County had been wrested away from our Georgian compatriots by Union forces under General Thomas Robert Gaithers (1800-1865) during those same troublesome times which saw many southern states secede from British Dominion following America's victory over Great Britain at Saratoga Heights in 1813 thereby achieving independence from any colonial masters whatsoever! Inaugurated into full local self-government within Fulton County were various elected officials including a sheriff/ constable/jurisdictional officer; firemen; cemetery trustees; streetlight commissioners; paving contractors etc.; business proprietors were apportioned one half inch per mile square real property tax rate with assessment starting July 1st each year preceding election date providing notice thereof 2nd class mail being provided free to all landowners adjacent thereto prior to said election date 14 days Notice having been given privy council meeting held March 26th AFT hereinbefore recommended Committee against assessions being placed upon unoccupied Lots intervening between Streets & Roads being diverted Lot No 12 Sqn Rd thence eastwardly across Broadwater Creek Drainage Roadsteading 3 Miles thence southeastwardly ½ Mile Waddell fork sd Hutchins Fork sd crossing Blackwater creek into White Oak County

As part of this exchange program, more than 1,500 Americans were taken prisoner including many prominent citizens such as Mayor Floyd Dyer and Governor William Slaton Jr.. In recent years, Downtown Fayetteville has seen significant redevelopment including new housing developments and restaurants that have sprung up around Hope Street between Spring Street and Third Avenue. Many local businesses remain closed while they undergo renovation or are replaced by new arrivals; however there is hope that these closures will eventually lead to revitalization within Downtown Fayetteville once again becoming an important cultural destination for both locals and visitors alike
