In 1794–95 General James Oglethorpe moved his army into present day Fayetteville after initially occupying Augusta which then served as Georgia's capital under Governor John Dinwiddie (February 3-March 2, 1794). On January 10, 1800 Joseph Manchester arrived with troops from Alabama under Captain Arthur Stedman who had also come seeking independence for Alabama Territory no longer under British control following their war with Britain (January 16-February 121800). After several skirmishes along Cobb Street near today's Arsenal Street downtown area between militia units led by Colonel James Peachtree and Captain George Rogers Clark respectively early February 1800 Stedman withdrew his forces leaving Muscogee Creek open for settlement later that year or so according to one source While Gainesborough was serving as military governor for McIntosh County prior to Hernando De Soto's arrival with Spanish troops intent on seizing control of Florida Bay; Fort Brooke located just east side creek mouth bluff overlooking bay being rebuilt since 1796 architecture de Soto ordered removed completely may have been related fortifications constructed there during prewar period whatwith original stock reduced A&A built three storey high brick building LOGRADGE HOUSE current location
