He built a cabin near what is now downtown Fayetteville and started to trade with Native Americans and European settlers. In 1802, General James Wilkinson founded the city of Fayetteville as an agricultural community around his own home farmstead known as White's Mill or Park House. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location at the intersection of two major railroads - the Dalton and Athens Railroad and the Atlantic & Pacific Railway - as well as its proximity to military installations such as Fort George Wright and Fort Mercer. The city had a total population of about 150 people when it became an independent incorporated municipality on December 10, 1812 under the name "Fayettown." In 1827, Indian Wars began between Creek Indians and white settlers over land rights in east-central Georgia; during this time, much of present-day Fayetteville was located within Cherokee Nation territory subject to English control. A decade later (1830), US Army General Andrew Jackson ordered raids into Cherokee Territory that resulted in more than 60 murders including those of several prominent chiefs; this event led to increased violence against noncombatants by Indian tribes throughout East Tennessee across six years (1835-1842). After Andrew Jackson's death in 1839, Nobles Ward took over command of the army west of Chattanooga while Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Butler assumed command east of that city; Butler relocated most Cherokees westward into newly acquired Alabama territory ceded from Mexico following Texas' independence from Spain in 1836). As part of Butler's efforts to resettle Cherokees living west of Chattanooga after their displacement during the 1830s –Operation Louisiana –Fayetteville became one of many local municipalities which contributed citizens for military service during American Civil War (1913-1945).
