Fayetteville, Georgia is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia and the county seat of Fayette County. The population was 25,521 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Chattahoochee River, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Atlanta. Fayetteville was founded in 1794 as a trading post by General James Wilkinson and his men during their military expedition against the Creek Nation. The town grew rapidly, becoming known for its fertile soil and severe winters. By 1825, Fayetteville had become an important center of cotton production due to its location on a river that supplied much of southern Alabama with this commodity. In 1847, Fayetteville became capital of Georgia; it remained so until 1881 when Atlanta assumed that role. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down part of downtown FayetteVILLE before retreating under cover of darkness; this event is known as the Battle of Jacksonville Landing.(1) From 1861-1865, Fayetteville served as Headquarters for Major General William Troup's Armyof NorthernGeorgiaand later Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederate army during peacetime.(2) During World War II many patriotic Americans volunteered to serve in Japan’s Imperial Japanese Army through Operation Coronet (1939-1945), serving as infantryman or truck drivers; these individuals are sometimes referred to as “The Japs” because they wore kimonos rather than pants.(3) Postwar growth in nearby Duluth led to increased competition for jobs within city limits and led to several zoning changes which limited development near waterways and parkland around downtown since such areas were seen as potential sources of tax revenue from developing businesses along those routes.) In 1969-1970 City Councilwoman Mrs. Shirley Hargrave successfully campaigned for incorporation into what would become Gwinnett County following passage by an act of the Georgia General Assembly apportioning congressional districts therein.;(4)(5)(6) Incorporation created new political boundaries which would have made it even more difficult for futureantesities adjacent to downtown from expanding westward.;(7)(8)(9)(10) However incorporation did not lead to any significant increases in housing prices or job opportunities within the city limits despite efforts by some developers.; instead most residents found themselves stuck between high priced neighborhoods east of downtown (on Ponce de Leon Avenue southward,) and less expensive neighborhoods west side where there were few if any job prospects outside skilled tradesmen/IT professionals./ Many residents – especially young families – left town after annexation while others simply unable to afford better settlement nearby.,(11) Today remnants including a few blocks northeast corner strip mall now home to several small businesses make up much older core commercial area underlying newer residential neighborhoods dating back twenty years or more
