The Gun Club of America was founded in 1898 and it is still a major firearms organization today. The first public shooting at Fayetteville College took place on October 5, 1898. There were also private shootings and hunting matches taking place throughout the years. In 1906, Fayetteville had its own rifle company which manufactured rifles for the American military during World War I. After World War I, there was an effort to establish a city police department but this failed due to lack of money. However, several years later, the City Council passed a resolution establishing the Police Department of Fayetteville which functioned as an arm of the city government until 1949 when it became an independent agency.

In 1853, Captain John Prentice opened a store next door to the Neely House called the Pioneer Store and Arms Co.. This store continued to sell ammunition and firearms until 1860 when it closed its doors because of financial difficulties. In 1861, Colonel William Tatum organized a volunteer regiment of artillery called Tiger's Battalion which included many black men from Fayetteville who were not allowed to own guns or receive training at white military academies due to their African heritage. Colonel Tatum offered these men free rifles if they joined his battalion which they did with great enthusiasm. The first rifle company (Cavalry) was formed in 1862 by Captain James Burchfield commandeered from Tiger's Battalion which had been disbanded earlier that year due to lack of equipment and volunteers available for duty]. This company served under General Wade Hampton during Confederate Campaigns up through Richmond where they surrendered on April 9th 1865 after suffering losses totaling over 100 killed, wounded, or missing including their captain James Burchfield who was captured along with most of the unit while escaping across Appomattox Court House Bridge into Virginia] ]. After Confederate Campaigns ended General Robert Ewell ordered all units must disband except for Center Block Company (Cavalry), which he kept secret from Federal troops so he could train them for an upcoming Invasion of Texas] ]. After Texas Invasion failed Lt Gov Boyd Ketchum dissolved Confederate Army effective May 3rd 1865]]. Captains James Burchfield (Cavalry) & George Witherspoon (Volunteer Infantry) were among those captured along with almost all of Center Block Company Cavalry following surrender.]
Fayetteville is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 32,878 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city located in Fulton County and the second largest city of suburban Atlanta after Atlanta. Fayetteville is home to The University of Alabama at Fayetteville, one of America's most prestigious universities. The first permanent white settlers in what would become Fayetteville were men from South Carolina who established a cabin on the Chattahoochee River in 1799. In 1807, Colonel James Wilkinson purchased 5 acres (2 km²) of land east of the town site from Amasa Walker for $700. He named it Fayetteville after General John Forbes' plantation near Philadelphia where he had been born three years earlier and raised. That year, Wilkinson erected a pioneer courthouse and jail and laid out streets that would later be called Main Street, Broadway Avenue and Park Drive. In 1811, Wilkinson renamed his town "Fayetteville" for General Nathaniel Greene who had fought with him during the Creek War of 1812. In 1821, Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest organized a militia to suppress a slave uprising by slaves under Captain Peter Minter at Athens Plantation near present-day Decatur Street and Broadwalk Avenue in downtown Fayetteville; however no one was killed or hurt as a result of the outbreak. In 1830–31 when Andrew Jackson became president of the United States following his election as an Adams man over disputed ballots in Mississippi), he ordered all federal troops withdrawn from Georgia except for 1 battalion under Colonel David Baird which remained to quell any local unrestrained by state authorities In 1840s some plantations were abandoned due to droughts caused by changes brought on by global sea levels change; this led to an influx of whites seeking political stability while African Americans continued being marginalized economically During Reconstruction era (1865–1877), white Southerners began returning northward while African Americans lost their right to vote or residencies within rural areas were revoked; this led to social unrest culminating with violence against whites culminating with Governor Robert Ewell ordering military suppression resulting in 102 deaths between 1865 and 1871 leading many people including Mayor James Moultrie plotting secession Fulton County seat moved from Decatur (now part of Atlanta) to Fayetteville starting with 1800 census
