Greek colonists arriving via sea voyages called this region "Athens" or "AthENS". By 1795 when French trader Antoine de Saint-Pierre traveled through this portion of present day Georgia he had christened it Fort Pulaski because General James Robertson had successfully defended Athens against attack from Creek Indians on July 12th 1794 while leading his militia against them at Sunnyside Hill outside Athens . Fayetteville, Georgia was founded in 1796 by General James Wilkinson. The city's first courthouse and jail were built on the current site of the Georgia State Capitol in 1814. In 1836, Fayetteville became a town when it was created from parts of Dunwoody and Wilcox counties. The city annexed portions of Union County in 1915 and incorporation as a city took place that same year. In 1924, Fayetteville hosted the Atlanta World's Fair, becoming one of only two cities in the United States to do so. During World War II, Fayetteville played an important role in the Battle of Fort Sumter; its military base allowed for significant Allied air bombardment against Confederate forces at nearby Pee Dee Island. After the war, Fayetteville experienced rapid growth with development such as a new downtown district and indoor shopping mall called "The Mall". However, during the late 1990s and early 2000s there were several large-scale accidents which caused extensive damage to both the cityscape and infrastructure.
