Afterward, Fayetteville became a center for slave trade and cotton farming until it lost its importance in 1847 when railroads came to prominence in Atlanta. In 1881, Fayetteville annexed part of Marietta and renamed itself after John Acheson, then Secretary of State under Presidents Rutherford B Hayes and Grover Cleveland. The city's growth continued through World War II with wartime industries including shipbuilding and aircraft production; however, these days most Fayettevilians are engaged in agriculture or services such as retail or government employment
