After leading his brigade into battle against a numerically superior Ulysses S.—supported by artillery from Fort Pulaski—Forrest retreated northeast across Chattahoochee River toward Nashville under heavy fire from Union artillerymen positioned along its banks (theBattle of Horseshoe Bend has been inaccurately reported as taking place on February 14). Forrest's retreat caused great embarrassment to his army and helped achieve Grant's victory over Confederate troops two months later at Big Bridge Over Bull Run Creek
