In 1847, Fairburn became one of six townships within Fulton County when it was created from parts of Cobb County and Gwinnett County. After being divided into two counties in 1865, Fulton County again included portions ofFairburn within its boundaries until 1978 when it merged with Cobb County to form the current Atlanta metropolitan area
