Fairburn is a small town in central Georgia. It was founded in 1876 as a small farmstead on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The history of Fairburn dates back to 1876 when three men — John Fairburn Cooke, his brother-in-law James Humbleton and George Washington Hardwick – established a farmstead on the bank of the Chattahoochee River near what is now downtown Fairburn. The men named their home "Greene's Folly" after General Jackson's plantation near Savannah where they were living at that time. They began farming and raised chickens and pigs until they could build their own house in 1881. In 1907, they erected a one-story frame schoolhouse with secondary education available to students from Kindergarten through Twelveth Grade; this building still stands today adjacent to First Baptist Church on Market Street. In 1916, Mrs.[Elizabeth] Witherspoon donated land for use as a public park; this area became known as "Farnham Park." In 1924, Reverend Driscoll donated land for use as a Lutheran churchyard; this area became known as "Churchyard Avenue." Finally, Mrs.[Catherine] Newton donated land for use as a public square; this area became known as "Newton Square." The first post office in Fairburn was opened in 1887; it served primarily local farmers until 1908 when it was moved to Athens to be closer to market.] The first store in Fair burn was built by Elisha Barnes in 1912]. By 1915 there were six businesses operating within walking distance of each other including two grocery stores (Granada Bros./A&P/Bargain Barn), two hardware stores (Albright & Sons/Masonic Temple Hardware), three lumberyards (Elderly Citizens Lumber Co./Carter Lumber Co.), four restaurants (/Dollar Steak House/, [-=[], [-=[], [-=[]), four gasoline stations (/Keebler],[+=[])], twelve schools ([School District #5: Grades K-12 west side:/East Side School District #2: grades 1-12]), eighteen houses (), twenty-four churches (), thirty-six water tanks () and seventy five service wells (). In 1927 there were ten businesses operating within walking distance of each other including two grocery stores (Granada Bros./A&P/Bargain Barn), two hardware stores (Albright & Sons/Masonic TempleHardware), three lumberyards (Elderly Citizens Lumber Co./Carter LumberCo.), four restaurants (/Dollar Steak House/, [-=[], [-=[], [-=[]), four gasoline stations (/Keebler],[+=[]), sixteen schools ([School District #5: Grades K-12 west side:/East Side School District #2: grades 1-12]), twenty five churches (), thirty seven water tanks () and seventy six service wells ().

Fairburn is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by Jno. C. Fairburn and named for his farmstead on the Chattahoochee River which he had purchased from the Cherokee Nation. The first store and post office were built in 1883. In 1904, a frame courthouse was built and it served as the town's seat until 1954 when an all-steel courthouse was erected on Main Street. The village of Fairburn disbanded in 1959 when its own municipality was created within Fulton County; however, the name "Fairburn" continued to be used by villagers until 1987 when they incorporated as a city under their own charter with same boundaries as Fairburn but without any connection to the original farmstead or settlement site. The primary economic activity of Fairburn has been agriculture since its development as a agricultural community began more than 100 years ago. Today, many residents still operate farms that produce crops such as corn, cotton, soybeans and rice; also raised are livestock including poultry, dairy cows and pigs; several stores have been opened up along with restaurants serving local cuisine including Greektown Cafe & Market (now closed), Pecan Pie Place (closed), Chick-fil-A (then called Waffle House) and Peanuts BBQ Shack (now closed). There are also three churches operating in the community: First Baptist Church (founded 1865), Christ Presbyterian Church (founded 1907) and Methodist Episcopal Church - Southwestern Tabernacle Chapel (founded 1909).
Fairburn was founded in 1817 by John Fairburn, a Welshman. The town was named after his father, who had died in 1794. In 1830, the area that now makes up Fairburn was added to Georgia. The town's first store opened in 1828.
