The first permanent settler in what would become Fairburn was Obadiah Cobb, who arrived on October 15, 1788, with his family from Augusta, Georgia. Cobb planted maize and potatoes near what would become downtown Fairburn on the east side of Chattahoochee River. He also laid out a plat for what would become East Lake Street and Second Street which ran along the riverbank. Founded as an agricultural community by settlers from Georgia and Alabama in 1812 to support cotton plantations in that region, Fairburn grew rapidly during the antebellum period due to its location on the main transportation artery between Atlanta and Mobile (then Spanish Fort). The city's commercial importance only increased after railroads came through in 1852; by 1870, Fairburn had 7 businesses listed in its Directory of Commerce. By 1900, however, cotton production had ceased altogether within Fayette County so Fairburn's growth stagnated until World War II when it exploded with wartime demand for military materials produced around Atlanta During World War II Interstate 95 was built through much of middle Georgia providing new opportunities for industry but not so much for agriculture which continued to decline until aluminum became widespread in postwar America and employment began to increase again; FAIRBURN METROPOLITAN AREA
