Fairburn is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,552 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Fairburn is located on the Chattahoochee River and contains three shopping malls: one opened in 1984, two in 1997 and one in 2002. The community began as a selection of farmers who had donated land to be platted into a town by commissioners under the homesteading act of 1800. The first settler was Nathaniel Smith who arrived on October 3, 1817 from Kentucky with his family. At that time there were only six families living in what is now Fairburn Township. In 1819 James Weldon purchased 2,000 feet (610 m) of good land south of present-day Fairburn Road for $600 and named it Weldon's Settlement after himself and his brother-in-law James Caldwell (the founder of nearby Duluth). They also erected a store and house here which still stands today. A post office called Weldon's Settlement was established in 1825; it closed in 1889. A new post office was built atpresent day Fairburn Road between Old Shorland Road and Howell Mill Creek for $2 per mile ($32 per km). In 1830 Jno Hargrave built a gristmill on Howell Mill Creek which became known as Hargrave's Mill; it ceased operations around 1840 when hand flour began to be produced there instead In 1835 Samuel Freeman bought 640 acres (268 ha) northwest of present day Fairburn Rd., east of Lowertown Rd., for $5 plus 500 acre share – this became Freeman's Farmstead where most residents grew corn and raised hogs until around 1870 When white settlement increased eastward along Lowertown Rd., many people who had grown crops left to take advantage of better soil conditions west of Lowertown Rd.; some moved back to Freeman's Farmstead but others developed homes near present-day Uppertown Rd.– current day Parkview Estates & Woodstock Drs.– referred to as "Old Town" during early 20th century development There are few remaining buildings from those days such as the original courthouse or schoolhouse; all that remain are foundations It wasn't until after General Sherman burned Atlanta during the American Civil War that people started moving back into Fairburn because they thought things would return to normal soon enough following Reconstruction efforts by President Ulysses S Grant . Many new businesses were founded here including one run by Wm Easley which made artificial snow for use on Christmas trees throughout Cobb County . By 1880 about half the population lived here while about 60% employed farmhands ; other jobs included mill workers, blacksmiths/weavers etcetera Even though most people worked outside their homes , laundry services were provided through local women known as “Laundress woman” due to their ability to spinfully fold cloth without having any help From 1865 until 1895 when water service came available via pipeline from Marietta , much farming took place off limits to locals due primarily to lack thereof Despite this limitation however farming did continue until electric power arrived sometime before 1920 photo courtesy The Townsend Family Collection In 1922 Fenton Hurst organized an agricultural show at Centennial Park which drew 10 000 visitors Two years later he organized another show at Fulton county fairgrounds One hundred exhibitors showed products from all over America Some famous visitors then included Pee Wee Reese Actor/Director

Fairburn was a small town in Georgia for many years. It is now a ghost town, but it had a long and rich history. The first people to live in Fairburn were the Peeples. They came from Tennessee and started farming around 1802. The next year, they decided to move to what is now Fairburn. They named their new village afterSir George Fairburn, an English gentleman who helped found Atlanta in 1785. The Peeples were the first white people to set foot in Georgia. In 1805, they built a cabin on the east side of the river near where present-day State Route 5 meets Interstate 285. By 1810, they had also built another cabin on the west side of the river opposite what is now State Route 434. From these cabins, the Peeples grew crops and raised livestock until they sold their land in 1840 to John Allen Middleton Jr., who moved his family here permanently. Middleton’s descendants developed mills and plantations during this time period. One of these families was that of James Moultrie Sr., who founded Moultrie & Company cotton ginnery in 1851 (now known as Southern Cotton Mill). The company became one of the largest textile firms in America during its early years; it produced uniforms for Confederate troops during World War II and continued operations until 1983 when it merged with JCPenney Incorporated to form Sears Holding Corporation (SHCO). Mister Rogers Elementary School was located at 202 White Street until 1984 when it closed due to budget cuts by then-Governor Nathan Deal administration; however, part of its demolition remains today across from Bull Run Park located at 501 East White Street which houses an old post office building which housed manufacturing plants including Rolls Royce automobiles between 1901-1953 before being converted into apartments/residence units called “Mister Rogers Place” In 1865, three brothers named Alexander McFarlane bought 640 acres adjacent towhat is now State Route 5 for $8 per acre from John Hargrave (whose family had owned much of eastern Fulton County since 1692).
