Fairburn is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first European to visit Fairburn was James DeKalb in 1794. He named it after his father-in-law, George Whitefield, who had earlier visited and surveyed the area. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and position on the Chattahoochee River. In 1819 Fairburn became a county seat and remained so until 1867 when it became an independent municipality. In 1907 Fairburn voters ratified a referendum creating a school district which would be separate from the existing City ofAtlanta School District. The new district's board of education quickly created a high school (now known as Kennesaw State University) and began construction of a two-story brick building on what is now Main Street. That same year also saw the opening of Grady College which today offers undergraduate programs in business administration, engineering, law enforcement/security services, health sciences/medical assisting, social work/nursing care and rhetoric and communication studies for both men and women students as well as graduate level degrees in Fine Arts Administration and Educational Leadership from Kennesaw State University's School of Education & Human Resources Administration program). During World War II Fairburn served as an ammunition dump for nearby Decatur Air Force Base; however its post office continued operations until 1951 despite being out of operation for more than four years due to postal strike action by employees against their union organizer - then current Mayor Floyd Alexander (D) Alexander later served as mayor from 1990-1994 before becoming one of Fulton County's five commissioners during the 2000 gubernatorial election cycle when he defeated former state senator Doug Jones (D). On December 3rd 2020Fairburn residents voted 54% yes on Question 2 meaning that they will become members of Gwinnett County next term!
