Fairburn is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River. Fairburn is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Fulton County was formed in 1821 from portions of Cobb and Gwinnett counties. The name "Fulton" means "free." In 1835, when Mechanicsville and other towns were established within Fulton County, they each received their own court system and jail facilities; these later became common throughout the county. The first settler in Fairburn was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1796 from England with his family and some slaves. He built a cabin on a bend in the Chattahoochee River and named it Caldwells Ferry. The first post office called Fairburn was established in 1801, under the name of Newnan-on-the-Hwy., but it changed its name to Fairburn soon after because so many people were moving to this new settlement that no one could find an original deed or letter from Caldwells Ferry. In 1836–37, John Pritchard moved to what is now Fairburn from Monticello and began setting up peach orchards on land he had acquired along the river banks near Cahaba Lake. His orchards remained until about 1850 when they were replaced by cotton plantations due to lower prices for cotton caused by American Civil War shortages of resources such as rice and tobacco (see also: History of Fulton County). In 1865–66 George Hargrave founded a gristmill on Parkman Creek which became known as Hargrave's Mill after him. By 1870 there were six stores in town with a population of 350 residents; by 1880 there were ten stores with a population of 2,500 residents; by 1900 there were thirteen stores with a population of 10,000 residents (see also: history of Fulton County). Downtown Fairburn contains several shops including Sears & Roebuck Department Stores (), JCPenney (), Macy's ()/, Express Scripts ()/, Home Depot (), Barnes & Noble (). There are two churches located within downtown – First Parish Baptist Church (), which opened in 1911 and replaced an earlier Presbyterian church that burned down,,and Second Presbyterian Church (). One interesting fact about downtown Fairbury is that it has been home to three professional wrestling venues – WINNACINI Coliseum (), where World Wrestling Federation (WWF) events took place between 1964-1978 (); The Georgia Dome (), where National Football League (NFL) games have taken place between 2002-present (); and Tabernacle Baptist Bible Chapel (). Additionally, several restaurants are located around downtown such as Donnybrook Tavern (), Joe's Crab Shack ()/(), BJ's Restaurant & Brewery ())/. Fairburn is a city in Georgia, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Fairburn is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town of Fairburn was founded by white settlers in 1819 and named for James Fairchild, an early settler on the east side of what is now Atlanta. In 1834, the town voted to move from its original location on the west side of MARTA (the precursor to today's Braves baseball team) to a new location on Peachtree Street east of downtown because of concerns about flooding during heavy rains caused by then-new Atlanta Mayor Andrew Johnson's construction project. The new community was called "Fairburn Square" after its square grid layout with streets running north-south and east-west. In 1885, businessman John Wesley Hill bought 6 acres (2 ha) around what is now Main Street and Walnut Street in the center of Fairburn Square for $1,500 and began developing it into an exclusive country club known as Hillsborough Manor which included a large home, golf course, tennis court, library and guest house with rooms for up to 100 guests each. The first president of Hillsborough Manor was General George Washington Custer who died there in 1886 while commanding Ulysses S Grant's army during the American Civil War. The mansion still stands today as one wing of Hillsborough Manor Park near Adair Avenue and Peachtree Road in northwest suburban Decatur County. The first post office in Fairburn opened on December 12, 1833 under name "Atlanta". It moved to its current location on Peachtree Street in 1834 after being located on Jackson Square since 1827. On November 5th 1920 local resident Hilda Boggs set fire to Sumter Hall School which had been built by her father-in-law Elijah Bowman as his family's ancestral home also serving as their Alma Mater High School until he died suddenly two years later leaving behind extensive debts that were never paid off including interest payments totaling $16,000 owed over two years! Hilda Boggs served three terms as mayor from 1923 until her death in 1928 before becoming Fulton County’s first female elected official when she won election as county treasurer concurrent with her husband’s successful run for state senate against incumbent Drue Laddie Coleman
The community of Fairburn was founded in 1839 by the merger of two earlier settlements, Easton and Clearwater. The original town site lay at the junction of two major transportation routes: the Georgia Railroad and the Yazoo Navigation Company's Yazoo River Road. At its peak, Fairburn had a population of about 1,200 people. By 1860, however, it had shrunk to just 100 residents. The town's fortunes changed when a canal was built through its territory, connecting the Yazoo River with Cooksville downriver. This new development allowed for more economic development and increased trade with other parts of Georgia and Tennessee. In 1881,Fairburn became anindependent municipality under the leadership of Mayor John Pritchard. In 1907 it merged with neighboring Corinth to form Corinth-Fairburn Borough. After World War II ended, Fairburn again lost much economic activity as Vaughn County gained wider influence within Georgia politics and began to develop new industries outside of agriculture. However, some businesses did remain in Fairburn until the late 1990s when they were gradually replaced by newer businesses closer to Interstate 20 or Atlanta proper
