Fairburn is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,749 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Fairburn is famous for its Farms and Vineyards which are located on the main drag of the town. The first Europeans to come to this area were French traders in 1765 who named it "Farms". The name probably comes from the French word "farme" meaning farm or estate. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Chattanooga to Fairburn after victories over Native Americans at Lookout Mountain and Tullahoma Hill. In 1806, William Hartsfield built a steamboat dock here and began carrying passengers betweenAtlanta and Savannah. The townsite was surveyed by John Todd in 1830, but development did not begin until 1840 when Jno. Crayton started building a sawmill on what is now Main Street. By 1850 there were 10 businesses in Fairburn with 2 mills lieing on Main Street alone! In 1868-69 James Wofford organized a Union Missionary Society (UMS) camp here coinciding with plans fora new cotton gin across the creek near today's Agricultural College campus; UMS members helped build that gin as well as numerous other cotton-related infrastructure projects throughout much of Georgia during this time period When World War II broke out in 1939, many businesses closed because they could not find enough jobs to replace those lost during wartime production; however, many continue to operate today including Kirby’s Carpet Cleaners which has been located here since 1955
