Fairburn is a small city in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,557 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cobb County and home to the Cobb County Courthouse. Founded in 1802 as a part of Marietta Township, Fairburn had a population of 4,604 in 2000. In recent years, it has lost its status as a bedroom community to Gwinnett County and now anchors the eastern fringe of Cobb County. The name "Fairburn" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where good will come." A mill town was founded on the Chattahoochee River by General James Fergus in 1802; Fairburn became its second town site. Millers built their homes around their mills until cotton plantations grew large enough to require more housing than could be provided by individual millers or families. In 1824, Elisha Peabody donated land for what would eventually become Fairburn Methodist Church; construction began on the church's first building in 1830 and finished six years later. The congregation soon outgrew its original location and moved into their present-day facility on Winthrop Road in 1859. As cotton prices rose during World War II, Fairburn became an important manufacturing center for munitions production; barracks were built here for soldiers who barracks were not available nearer home overseas. After the war ended, many factories closed but some stayed open such as Ford Motor Company which made Atlanta its corporate headquarters until 1992 when it relocated to Molineux, Illinois.. After decades of decline due largely to demographic changes within Cobb County (emerging suburban areas replaced downtowns), Fairburn's fortunes began to reverse with growth near Interstate 85 and new development along State Route 515 (the former routing of Ulysses S Grant Boulevard) starting around 2000%. This growth led to increased job opportunities and renewed interest in downtown business districts – including portions of Midtown known locally as "The Triangle". By 2006–2007 only 10% of all jobs reported within Downtown Cobb were related to traditional retail businesses – that number had risen above 50% by 2009 thanks largely to new development along I-85 north of Midtown mall area called Shinola Center which attracted major retailers such as Sears Holdings/Sears Roebuck etc., leading downtown business owners (and developers) once again proclaiming Fairburn 'The Core'. According To Mayor Mike Smith: "What we've done is create something like two blocks square since 2000...we're really doing something about [the] decline".Today Downtown is one continuous block with several high-end restaurants (Lingonberry’s BBQ being notable), several top cultural venues including Forsyth Park Amphitheater & Coca Cola Coliseum across I-285 from Midtown core while still having access easily accessible stores likeTarget and Walmart nearby like most inner city neighborhoods have difficulty achieving
