In 1865, a new company named Winchester Repeating Arms Company was founded in Fairburn by John Winchester and Richard Colt. This company developed the first bolt-action rifle in America. Ammunition sales at Winchester became so important that the company was sold to Browning Firearms Corporation in 1926. The Browning Group continued production of ammunition until it merged with Remington Arms Company in 1988.
Fairburn is a town in Lumpkin County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga, Tennessee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Fairy" had been given to Fairburn by early settlers because they believed that some people living there were fairies. In 1814, James Fenton built a home on what is now Elm Street in Fairburn and named it after his mother's maiden name Fairy. In 1825, John Goodrich platted and calledFairburn Village which included all of Lumpkin County west of the Chattahoochee River except for the community of Forest Grove (later Athens). This village was abandoned in 1827 when Goodrich sold his rights to Farmersville Township north of Interstate 75. In 1834, Wm. Ladd founded a cabin near present-day Fairburn on Coffee Creek where he owned land that still stands today. He named it "Ladd's Cabin". The first store located in Fairburn opened in 1840 by Hiram Burt who also operated an inn adjacent to Ladd's Cabin until 1850 when he moved his business to Athens and built the first brick building on Elm Street. A post office called Fairburn was established in 1846, but no mail arrived there until 1865 when Samuel Pemberton sent a package from Greeneville, Tennessee through Auburn Mail Company shipsweepers with letters printed on paper ballots that sailed upriver from New Orleans across Lake Pontchartrain for delivery into Savannah Beach below Old Town before landing at Fort Moultrie along with other mail packages during Confederate General Robert E. Lee's march through Georgia on April 12-13th 1861
