In 1764, General James Oglethorpe established Fort George at present-day East Point with his brigade of militia under Major John Dunmore. Dunmore had been sent by Parliament as an agent for trading with Native Americans in what is now southeast Alabama and south Georgia. He soon realized that he could not trade with these people because they had no paper currency or markets for goods other than scalps and spears; so he built Fort Oglethorpe to protect his trade routes from Indian attack and also increased his forces potential against any possible Cherokee incursion into this newly claimed territory - something which Creek chief Etowah unsuccessfully attempted to do twice during the early 19th century).Dunmore's fortification helped prevent English traders from penetrating northeast Georgia as far as Savannah while also thwarting future attempts by Muscogee Chief Attakullo II (the founder of Jacksonville) to reach southeastern Tennessee by land route through central Alabama only about halfway across the state before reaching Mobile Bayou... In 1802 Spanish explorer Andrés de la Garza explored east point Peninsula [sic] but did not enter because of lack of water resources available on then undeveloped peninsula today including Pedrafeiras Island offshore]." He was most likely referring to Captain Juan Crespí who discovered Pensacola Bayou on July 11st 1788 while exploring northwest Florida looking for a new route northward via Mississippi River Valley (originally called Tampa Bay)

The towns of Savannah and Augusta were founded in 1795 and 1800 respectively, but no town was established at Possum Springs until 1822. The town charter for East Point was granted on May 3,1822 by Governor Joseph Easley. The original plat of East Point specified that it would be “a Township . . . bounded on the north by High Street; on the east by Bulloch Street; on the south by US-17; and on the west by Chattahoochee River” On July 1, 1825, a post office was organized at East Point with one letter patent from Georgia Governor Robert Macon. It has been reported that mail service between Savannah and Atlanta stopped around this time because of Tecumseh's Insurrection which began in 1812 In 1865, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, many African Americans were moved to plantations in what is now Druid Hills Annexation Area near Marietta. This forced many African Americans out of their homes in rural areas like East Point where they lacked basic amenities such as water and education opportunities. As a result of this resettlement program known as "The Great Migration", most black people living inEastPoint left within 10 years after arriving there

East Point was founded in 1794 by the French and British at the head of a group of Indians. It became an American colony in 1801, and was named for George Eastman, founder of Rochester, New York. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period, and by 1860 it had a population of over 20,000. In 1871, East Point attained city status and began to develop into a major commercial center. In 1925, the United States Postal Service moved its post office from Jacksonville to East Point, making it one of the first U.S. cities to have a city government. During World War II, East Point played an important role as a base for Allied forces operations in southern Georgia and southeastern Alabama. After the war ended, growth slowed but did not stop until the late 1990s when new development pushed eastward along Highway 1 made East Point again a major cultural and commercial center.
