Smith and Hiram Sibley installed an artificial creek that served as a Shooting Range from which shooters could take advantage of the good cover provided by the trees surrounding the range. In 1916, Captain Halsey Dyer purchased land adjacent to The Arsenal for use as a Shooting Range. This area became known as "East Point Park." By 1933, there were ten shooting ranges in operation throughout Georgia with over 1 million rounds fired annually! In 1936-1937, East Point hosted its first international air Races sanctioned by the International Aero Club (IAC). These races occurred on Saturday afternoons during summer months and featured some of the most advanced aircraft of their time including bombers and fighters from around the world.

They then passed an ordinance authorizing their own city government with a City Council made up of fifteen citizens selected by popular vote instead of seven appointed by the governor. However, this city never materialized because funding could not be found to build both the fire department and municipal hall. In 1951, East Point residents obtained referendum support from the City Council for annexation into Atlanta; however, this request also failed when only 2/3 of voters approved it (the rest supporting annexation into Fulton County). In 2007, plans were announced for development in what would have beeneast point's first major economic development in over fifty years if all went smoothly; however local protests quickly erupted after developer Don Simpson announced plans for high- rises that would overlook most homes in east point and potentially create significant negative impacts on its environment and economy
