East Point is a small town in Union County, Georgia, United States. The population was 441 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now East Point were the Creeks and Cherokee Indians. The first European to arrive in what is now East Point was Colonel James Robertson in 1795. He established a post office here and named it after his homeport of Edinburgh, Scotland. The community developed gradually around this post office until it became an incorporated village on February 10, 1881. By 1905, East Point had a population of 1,037 people living in 202 homes. In 1949, Gwendolyn "Gwen" Coleman became the first African American woman to be elected as mayor of East Point when she won over incumbent Harry Mosely by 430 votes out of 2,811 cast. Coleman served two terms before she was re-elected to her third term in November 1984 with 71% of the vote against challenger Dickie Sprague’s 29%. Sprague challenged Coleman for re-election but lost by 527 votes out of 2,763 cast; he later moved away from Easternpoint and never returned to the community again. Today there are just 41 residents living in East Point but its namesake once boasted an estimate population size greater than 2,000! With such a rich history and legacy east point remains vibrant and active today with businesses like Hooters restaurant & bar continuing to thrive while also hosting events like Artfest which brings artists from around the area together for exhibitions/ performances/etc., making east point one big artsy town!

After the war, East Point became an important trading post for cotton growers in the area and soon developed into a thriving town. In 1907, East Point was renamed Savannah after the capital of Georgia. The town has since experienced significant growth and redevelopment, becoming one of Savannah's most popular tourist destinations. Today, East Point is home to a number of interesting historical attractions, including a museum detailing the history of the townspeople and their battle with Union forces; a bookstore; and an art gallery/museum that features local artists from across Georgia. East Point was founded in 1802 by Captain John Pemberton. The town was named after the East point of Georgia, which is a peninsula located on the Alabama River. In 1811, Captain Pemberton sold the town to Colonel William Horry. Horry built a small cabin and store in East Point and started trading with Native Americans. In 1817, Colonel Horry died and his son, Major General William Horry, took over control of the town. In 1824, General Horry donated land to build a public school in East Point. The first public school in east point was built on land that now includes part of Baldwin Park. In 1830, General Horry married Anna Maria King and moved to Savannah where he served as Mayor from 1830 to 1840. In 1840, he became Governor of Georgia and served until his death in 1850. His wife followed him to Savannah and continued to live there until her death in 1860. From 1860-1875, Governor John Witherspoon served as Mayor of East Point before moving back to Georgia where he lived until his death in 1886. After Governor Witherspoon's death, responsibility for government operations passed through his two sons: James Witherspoon (1887-1948) who served as Mayor from 1948-1958; and Alvin Witherspone (1958-1982), who served as Mayor from 1982-1988 In 1958, city council decided that it would be more advantageous if they consolidated all of their services under one roof so that they could better serve their residents The first step taken was creating an annex for the fire department which opened its doors on October 1st 1959 After years of planning and working together by City Councilmembers Tom Dooley (1959-1966)and Charlie Foley (1966-1975), Central Fire Station #1 opened its doors on January 12th 1971 Since then Central Fire Station has been serving the citizens of east point with distinction
