East Point, Georgia is a small town located in Macon County, Georgia. The population was 5,005 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. East Point was founded by white Settlers in 1821 and named after East point on the Chattahoochee River. The first store in town was built by Isaac Hawkins in 1824. In 1830, John Fenton took possession of land northeast of present-day East Point and founded what is now known as Fentonville. In 1835, James Aiken purchased 640 acres of land east of present-day East Point from Andrew Johnson for $4,000 cash. As a result of this purchase, Aiken became one of the earliest owners and developers of Macon County. The first school in East Point was organized in 1836 under the name "Fenton Academy." After some additions were made to the original building over time (the current schoolhouse was built around 1861), it became known as "Eastpoint School" or simply "Eastpoint." The school district grew rapidly due to its proximity to downtown Atlanta and its ability to provide education for citizens from all walks of life without having to leave their homes. According to local legend, Rear Admiral Ewell ordered all naval forces not involved in World War I to leave Mobile Bay and head towards Gulfport Mississippi for fuel supplies when he learned America had entered war against Germany without him knowing it.
