East Point is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now East Point was John Chapman who arrived in 1795 and soon after raised a family. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Georgia and burned much of what is now East Point for revenge on the Cherokee nation. That same year, Chapman donated land to become the nucleus of what would later be East Point Township. In 1828, President James K. Polk appointed Colonel George Washington Hill as US commissioner to Indian Affairs in order to negotiate treaties with the Creek and Seminole nations. As part of that assignment, Hill built a house on his property which became known as "Hill's House". When Georgia became an independent country in 1868, East Point remained part of Fulton County but its name changed to Atlanta because it was considered an important center for trade with southern states at that time. The city began growing rapidly during the 1870s and 1880s as cotton prices increased and transportation became available from nearbyAtlanta via steamboats/railroads. By 1890, Atlanta had outgrown East Point and created its own municipality called Midtown which includes parts of downtown Atlanta today

East Point was a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States for over 100 years. The community is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and has been known as an agricultural center since the early 1800s. The first permanent settlers to East Point were James A. Moore and his wife Sarah in 1818. They founded a log cabin on what is now the east side of Main Street. The Moore family made their home here until 1830 when they moved to Milledgeville. In 1834, surveyor George Hinkle established a post office at East Point and named it after General Andrew Jackson (1767-1845). At that time, East Point was only a scattering of homes and farms along the Chattahoochee River. In 1840, John Bledsoe built an sawmill at East Point which continues to operate today. In 1843, Isaac Sprague platted what is now downtown East Point and named it Spraguetown after himself and his brother-in-law Uriah Greenough (1784-1857). In 1863, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Easley called upon local farmers to provide provisions for his army besieging Atlanta. Many locals contributed land or goods to help support the Confederate military effort. By 1865, most of eastern Fulton County had come under Union control following the Battle of Resaca de la Palma. Following Union rule in Fulton County, many aspects of life changed including agriculture becoming more important than before due to lack of available resources outside of Georgia while also reducing competition from other states within Georgia’s borders.. Agricultural production continued to be key throughout Reconstruction until 1946 when statehood led to increased competition among states for economic resources which ultimately caused farming jobs in Georgia to become fewer and further apart than they once were.. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender in 1945, many Japanese Americans living in southernGeorgia left their homes for fear that they would be taken into custody by US authorities if returned home.. As a result, many people from eastern Fulton County moved back into their homes around this time as well.. However, some residents decided not to returns back home because there were few job opportunities open up elsewhere in postwar America.. In 1951 Spruce Plateau Homes Development Co., Inc., renamed themselves "Eastpoint Development" Incorporated with plans announced by then Mayor Harry Wiggs Jr., who desired "a development company rather than just another housing developer". This move away from individual home ownership towards developments became one trend during tumultuous times period dubbed “ stabilization” era whereAtlanta experienced rapid growth across all sectors through aggressive real estate promotion strategies opposed by opponents labelled “ decentralization advocates” who wanted more government involvement with daily life activities
