East Point is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is located on the Chattahoochee River. The first settler in East Point was John Atkins who built a cabin in 1795. In 1810, Wm. Fenton founded a store and trading post at East Point. In 1824, James Suckling established a ferry service between East Point and northern Fulton County. In 1833, John Baptiste Pritchard built a lockside tower to provide access to the Chattahoochee River for shipping. The town's first courthouse was built in 1834 by Elijah Hinton. In 1840, Isaac Asbury founded the Asbury Arsenal near present-day Westpoint on land he had purchased from William Troupes Jr., one of Cobb Galloway's investors in the Savannah Railroad Company. At Asbury's Arsenal, he developed a lead mine that became one of the largest lead mines in America outside of Maine and New England. In 1860, David Wilcox organized an arsenal at East Point with help from General Nathan Bedford Forrest to arm Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War while they fought against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant. After Confederate troops surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9 1865, most of eastern Fulton County including East Point passed into Union hands as part of Reconstruction after the war ended. By 1870 however, most African Americans had been removed from east Fulton County under orders of President Andrew Johnson as part of his "Emancipation Proclamation". In 1892–93 Alfred Capps bought land adjacent to what is now downtown East Point from Jno.[?] Ewing for $1 million which created what is now known as Capps Park bounded by First Street (north), Second Street (east), Third Street (south) and Elmhurst Avenue (west).
