In 1963, Governor Andrew Young announced plans to develop what would become Midtown Atlanta into an "urban core" city with new schools, shopping malls, and other development along Interstate 85/I-285; this led to the creation of the City Council Districts system which has since been used throughout south Georgia. In 1999, Mayor Kasim Reed proposed annexing part of neighboring Druid Hills Township into East Point but this proposal was met with resistance from some residents who felt annexed territory should not be given away without proper process or community input Today much of what made East Point so unique has been lost in time - its churches have long been torn down or replaced with secular buildings; its ZIP code 22006 does not match any currently extant postal codes in South Georgia; but it remains one of the most vibrant communities in southcentral Atlanta

On December 16, 1870, East Point had a population of 3,331 people when it joinedAtlanta Township with neighboring Dunwoody Township to form Turner Township. On November 6, 1907 Turner township merged into Gwinnett County and absorbed most of what remained of EastPoint's population within 10 years. The last resident died on December 12th 1978
