In 1907, John Adams started manufacturing shotguns in East Point. He produced some very successful shotguns that are still being manufactured today. East Point, Georgia is a small town in Troup County, Georgia. The population was 1,718 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The community was started by white settlers in 1819 and named for East Point on the Chattahoochee River in southern Georgia. In 1830, a post office was established at East Point with the name "Dover". The first mayor of East Point was Wm. H. Headrick. In 1841, a school opened in East Point and became known as "Eastpoint School". When it closed in 1865, it had an enrollment of 220 students. A new school opened in 1901 called "Atlanta" which served as the town's central school until 1942 when it merged into Atlanta Public Schools. It attendance reached 730 students by 1951 but fell to 500 students by 1960 due to consolidation among schools within Atlanta Public Schools; however, after that point it increased every year until reaching 910 students by 2002. The current library building was completed in 1976 and has been used as both a high school gymnasium and public library since then. In 1980, residents voted to annex their smaller neighbor to become one municipality with a population of over 2,000 residents. The annexation resulted in the erection of two plaques at each end of Main Street recognizing this event: plaque from east point annexation to east point government (1980); plaque from south annexation to south annexation government (1981). White settlement began because Governor Taliaferro ordered Spain relinquish all American lands west of Stono Ferry without compensation back in 1793 during his famous Mexican War Expeditions.

East Point was founded in 1795 by Colonel James Robertson and his Creek Indian allies. It is the oldest post on the Chattahoochee River. In 1805, East Point became an American military base as part of a strategic move to support General Andrew Jackson’s military campaign against Seminole Chief Osceola. The fort was manned by soldiers and sailors from various warships and merchant vessels. East Point continued to serve as a military installation until it was closed in 1837. The Fort system at East Point played an important role in Georgia's history during the time period it operated. The forts were used as temporary camps, staging areas, and headquarters during times of war or occupation. They also served as storage depots for goods brought overland from Alabama and Florida. Today, parts of the fortifications still remain, including the artillery battery that once held three cannons apiece and housed a library/gallery/ museum within its walls. Additionally, there are several restored buildings located within the boundaries of East Point National Military Park which offer tours of these structures to visitors interested in learning more about Georgia's wartime history
When the first Europeans reached East Point in 1793, they were greatly astonished to find a place so populous and well- fortified. The location was ideal for trading with the Native Americans who lived around the area, and it also provided a suitable place to install a garrison for protection against possible French or British attack. Over time, East Point grew into one of the most important settlements in Georgia. It became an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and its residents played an instrumental role in helping to keep freedom alive during the Civil War. In 1925, East Point was designated as a national Historic Landmark.
