East Point is a small town in Chattahoochee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of theAtlanta metropolitan area. East Point was named for Fort Eastpoint on the Chattahoochee River near present-day Decatur, Georgia. A Presbyterian church was built in 1828 and became known as "The Brick Church" because of its use of large bricks to build its exterior walls. In 1886, the Episcopal church moved to East Point from Plato City, Florida and continues to be used today as an Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal church. In 1865, local farmers decided to donate land for a school district which would include East Point. The first school building was erected on what is now Main Street in 1867; it served as the town's high school until 1955 when it was replaced by the current facility on First Street. In 1914, Mrs. Lula Whitehead donated land adjacent to her house on Second Street for a daycare that would become known as Whiteheads Daycare Center; it remains open today and serves as one of the town's few remaining businesses intact from before 2000s redevelopment efforts which also included construction of several new stores and restaurants around town including one within walking distance of most homes (the now closed Hooters restaurant).

The first permanent European settler in what is now East Point was John Hammond, who purchased land in 1797 from the Creek nation. Hammond built his house on a bluff overlooking the bay which he called Government House. Hammond's home served as both a headquarters for his colony and as an early school which taught English to local natives. By 1802, when the United States acquired East Point from the Creeks, it was part of an enlarged lands purchases which included much of today's Georgia. The area that includes present-day East Point had been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries before Europeans arrived, and some of these cultures continued to thrive into the 19th century.
