Admiral John Richardson, Flag Officer, Atlantic Fleet (1899-1927) In 1899, Commodore George Dewey became the first United States Navy officer to be promoted to Rear Admiral. Commodore Dewey had served in the US Naval Academy and upon graduation was assigned as commander of Destroyer Squadron 2 () on USS Constitution (). In 1915, Commodore Dewey was transferred to USS Massachusetts () as its flag officer. There he supervised destroyer operations in the Caribbean Sea and during World War I served aboard USS Wyoming () and USS Maine (). After World War I Commodore Dewey returned to the Naval Academy where he graduated second in his class in 1919. He then assignment as commanding officer of Destroyers, Patrol Force 5 (), based at Norfolk, Virginia. He remained with this unit until 1922 when he was appointed Commanding Officer of Cruiser Division 10 (), which moved from Newport News, Virginia to East Point, Georgia. This command included USS New York (CVA-2), USS Essex (CV-9), USS Python (APD-1), USCGC Farragut (CG-8) and CG‑21. From 1923 until 1927 he was also Commanding Officer of Force Protection Squadron 1(). During these years he developed a program for gun security at naval installations around the world including those at Hampton Roads(), Guantanamo Bay*, Fort Lauderdale*, Guantánamo Bay* (*). In 1928 Commodore Richardson resigned from his command due to ill health and entered retirement age. He died suddenly two months later at his home in Greenwich Village,, New York City.. His death left a vacancy on the Flag Officer's Staff responsible for ship security worldwide that has not been filled since 1929.*

The first permanent settler in what would become East Point was William Houstoun, who arrived in 1785 with his family from Tennessee. In 1802, Captain John Fenton landed at East point on the Savannah River to build a ferry service between Savannah and Augusta. His brother-in-law James McGillivray purchased land east of present day East Point and founded McGillivraytown in 1803. In 1827, General John Buford decided to make East Point his headquarters during his campaign against Mobile Bayou Secessionists claimant Andrew Johnson and other forces under General Nathan Bedford Forrest went to war against Buford's command at the Battle of Selma Creek which resulted in Johnson being captured and executed by hanging outside ofMobile, Alabama some time after that battle occurred; this event also resulted in Forrest becoming Georgia's first lieutenant general since the American Revolution (1814–1865). In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early invaded North Carolina and occupied Raleigh before withdrawing back into South Carolina due to Union advances across the Carolinas known as “the Johnston Campaign” which ended four days later when early morning raids by Union forces led by MajorGeneral Ulysses S Grant forced Early north through Charlotte into Virginia where he surrendered on April 12th 1865. This event marks one of history's greatest cavalry engagements as it was fought over a distance equivalent to more than 100 miles (160 km). East Point post office opened on October 5th 1800 under name Hamptonville while located within Burke County near present day Roswell off US Highway 20A just south of Interstate 75; it closed on November 16th 1801 due to financial difficulties caused by increased postage rates charged byAtlanta mail carrier Fulton Mail Company for carrying mail from eastern Georgia through Brunswick County On July 15th 1861, General Stoneman married Miss Eliza Auld from Nashville Tennessee at her home plantation around 6pm local time as she had no prior marriage certificate or other proof of her identity; they soon moved their residence to 4609 Old Hickory Road now called Gadsden Street east of I-75 just south of Sandy Springs off State Route 122 known then as Bull Run Road now called Druid Hill Avenue recalled that they dined with Governor Nathan Deal at Governor Deal's Mansion following their wedding night services were conducted outdoors upon lawn adjacent to newly completed Beech Grove Cemetery west side road leading south from I-75 just north Of Griffin Mill Rd east side road leading northwest from I-75 exit 22) bride wore white lace gown & veil while groom wore black pants & vest blazer
