East Point, Georgia is a small town located in Perry County, Georgia. The town was named for East Point on the Gulf of Mexico, which is now within the city limits of Mobile, Alabama. The first European settlers in the area were Frenchmen who arrived in 1692. In 1802, after the Treaty of Gadsden was signed between Spain and France, East Point became part of Spanish Florida. Englishman James Wilkinson traveled through the area in 1795 and called it "The Headlands." In 1819 Governor John Quincy Adams ordered a survey to be made of all land east of the Chattahoochee River and north of Buttsville Creek. East Point was selected as one of five townships to be formed from this survey. The town was founded on April 1, 1821 by Captain Samuel Morse and his family. In 1830 East Point began manufacturing cotton ginned cloths which became very popular with American consumers because they could be produced quickly and at low cost without using slave labor. After two years of hard work by Captain Morse's team, the cotton gin production had increased to such an extent that he decided to sell his share in the business to Jno Acheson for $5,000 cash. Acheson then proceeded to build a large cotton warehouse near present-day Third Street and 11th Avenue for storing and distributing his new product. In 1832 Captain Morse donated 50 acres (20 hectares) northeast of present-day Eastpoint for public use as a school ground known as "Morse's Mills." This gift has been used ever since as the site where students learn about local history at Eastpoint High School. It should also be noted that during this time period there were very few roads or schools available in rural areas like Perry County so Captain Morse's donation was quite significant both financially and politically! Captain Morse died in 1840 but his wife continued running their textile company until her death ten years later. In 1865 Congress passed an act providing for statehood for Alabama which led toAlabama becoming oneofthe United States states on November 15th,1865! After Alabama attained statehood many people started moving westward into Perry County looking for homes; including some captain Morse's descendants who continued running their textile company until it closed down around 1980! Today much property still remains within boundaries set by Captain Morse himself!
