On April 12th of that year, Ewell's force successfully crossed the river and attacked Union positions at Battle of Wilderness Creek before being driven back southward towards Savannah. However, news arrived ahead of schedule at Confederate Headquarters that General Robert Ewell had been killed in action a day earlier near Cold Harbor Junction instead of reaching Savannah as planned; this effectively ended any hope of Ulysses S Grant achieving an overwhelming victory over Confederate forces within Alabama and Florida during the American Civil War. Following the war, East Point continued to be used as a military base until it was sold to Atlanta businessmen Augustus Troup and John Hammond in 1923. Hammond renamed the facility Fort Hood (later Fort McNair) after General Douglas MacArthur's flagship during World War II beforeClosure following World War II inside Fort Hood until it reopened as an education center in 1991 named after then-Governor George Wallace). The area around today'sFort Hood has been extensively redeveloped into upscale neighborhoods such as Midtown Atlanta and Sandy Springs since its closure; however much of what once stood at East Point remains visible today including many of its historical buildings including Fort hood itself which still stands today although heavily damaged by fire
East Point was a small, isolated town in Cobb County, Georgia. It was founded by General James Robertson on December 15, 1819 as East Point Plantation. The first settler in East Point was John Aiken. It was incorporated as a city on February 4, 1886.
