East Point is a small town in Clarke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settler in East Point was John Cook in 1823. The community was named for East Point on the Chattahoochee River, which was then known as "Fort Payne" and later "East point." In 1827, Colonel James Moore moved his family from Macon to East Point and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. He named the settlement after himself and his wife Anna Catey Moore. In 1830, George Washington Chatham arrived from Savannah with his family and founded Chatham Station east of town on Chattahoochee Creek. After years of growth by entrepreneur Andrew Johnson (founder of J&J credit union), East Point had a population of 2,000 in 1860 when he sold it to General Lucius Noland for $10 million dollars ($ today). In 1865-1867, during Reconstruction era following the Civil War, many African Americans were allowed to purchase land east of town as part of an effort to end segregation in American society. Many black families settled around what is now First Avenue north and west of Main Street; including Oscar Fisk's grocery store (now demolished) and Elijah Muhammad's church (today used as a library). Although some residents fought integration efforts such as boycotts or violence against white people, most blacks within East Point sided with their new neighbors until after passage of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1870 led to increased Enforcement actions by Ulysses S. Grant's administration targeting all forms of social discrimination against African Americans across America including educational opportunities for black citizens living east ofAtlanta's city limits The community experienced rapid growth following World War II due to its proximity to US Army troops stationed at Fort Stewart garrisoned at nearby Dahlgren Air Field; access to education available through military academies like Westpoint Military Academy located just south on I-85 off exit 16A near Gadsden Mall; job opportunities available through various post-war businesses such as Ponce de Leon Chevrolet dealership; and suburban development beginning around 1950s that saw rise in real estate prices throughout Cobb County aided by interstate highway construction

East Point, Georgia is a small town located in Macon County, Georgia. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. East Point is situated on the shores of Lake Lanier and is known for its beautiful architecture and historical significance. The first Europeans to visit what is now East Point were French traders who discovered the area in 1692. In 1819, General James Wilkinson founded a trading post on the east bank of Lanier River, which became known as East Point after him. It was here that General Wilkinson met his future wife, Martha Washington. The first brick buildings in East Point were built between 1829 and 1830 by Captain John Chilton of Savannah. Captain Chilton developed land adjacent to what is now East Point to create a series of plantations that he called "Chilton's Plantations." His slaves worked these plantations until 1861 when they were emancipated by General Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War. In 1837, Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest established Fort Pulaski at what is now Eastpoint in order to blockade Spanish-controlled Florida and protect other Native Americans from Spanish encroachment. The fortifications at Eastpoint remained active until 1898 when they were decommissioned and turned over to the United States government for use as military barracks and storage facilities for munitions plants near Atlanta. During World War II, many residents of East Point served in the United States Armed Forces or volunteered their services with local organizations such asthe National Defense Alliance or patriotic groups such as Liberty Bell Club or American Red Cross Society. Some examples include: First Sergeant Norman Halsey who helped lead Company E (Red Patch) of 4th Infantry Regiment during Operation Market Garden; Sgt George Lewis who served with Company K (Crazy Legs) 3rd Infantry Regiment during Operation Overlord; Johnny Appleseed who was honorary chairman of Home Front Committee within Local 3503/National Defense Alliance; Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt who chaired Women's Auxiliary Service Committee within AFSCME (American Federation of Labor); Frank Buckner Jr., a Navy veteran who organized Homefront Committee within AFSCME (American Federation of Labor) which raised money for war relief efforts; Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt also served on Ad Hoc Planning Board for heroic women workers exhibited at Crystal Palace Exhibition There are several schools located around town: Gadsden County High School - located just off US Highway 171 north of town; James Mudd Military Academy & Technology Center - also near USHighway 171; Forsyth County Technical Institute - located off US Highway 231 south from town center; Jackson Hewitt Middle School - also near USHighway 231 south from town center; North Gwinnett Community College - located about 10 miles northeast from town center across Interstate 85/Hwy 21W.; Peach Valley Christian Academy – also near I-85/Hwy 21W.; Stone Mountain Baptist Church – inside old post office building which has been converted into a community center housing various activities including an art museum and library among others
