The area that now makes up East Point was first settled by Indians in the 17th century. In 1801 the English built the fortifications known as Fort George on what is now Paulding Street in what is now East Point. The name of this harbor became East Point after British General James Brodie used it to disembark his troops coming from Mexico during the War for Independence. In 1836 General Nathan Bedford Forrest led a cavalry force against Ulysses S Grant during their Battle of Talmore Hill which resulted in Forrest being captured and executed outside Fort Pulaski near here some years later by order of General Robert Ewell who thought he had aided Grant. The town got its start as an agricultural community with cotton plantations but these closed down around 1901 when Georgia became a state and cotton prices plummeted due to American industry consolidation west of Interstate 20 (the so-called "Great Migration"). However, many residents still lived there until recently because much of their farmland remains extant within walking distance or driving distance today from most parts of the city proper where development has taken place over the past few decades primarily along I-20/Chatham Boulevard corridor running northeast/southwest through downtown Atlanta into Midtown Chattanooga thence northwestward into Midtownand Finally southeastward to Five Points (east side of Chattahoochee River) The growth prospects for East Point have been very good since 1990 when Mayor Bill Cobb opened up new business opportunities along I-20/Chatham Boulevard Corridor while also investing millions into upgrades to local schools including building brand new high school buildings (including one on Third Street), renovation or expansion of old ones such as Paulding High School which houses several thousand students today; installation or replacement bothadicronic streetlights throughout Downtown Athens; enlargement or improvementof transportation options including increased MARTA service; and creation or enhancementof parks including Oneonta Park located about five miles east across Chatham Boulevard from downtown Atlanta just off Interstate 20
